Shelton will begin his 2026 Australian Open campaign by facing Ugo Humbert in the first round of the tournament. Ahead of the Grand Slam event, the Frenchman participated in two tournaments: the 2025 Brisbane International and the Adelaide International.
In Brisbane, Humbert lost to seventh seed Cameron Norrie in the first round. He followed this with a strong performance, defeating Térence Atmane, Tallon Griekspoor, Alexander Shevchenko, and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to reach the final. Here, he faced Tomáš Macháč and finished as the runner-up.
Shelton and Humbert have never competed against each other on the ATP Tour; therefore, their first-round match at the 2026 Australian Open will be their maiden match-up.
The winner of the first-round match between Shelton and Humbert at the Melbourne Major will advance to face either Gaël Monfils or qualifier Dane Sweeny in the second round of the tournament.
