Ben Shelton vs Pierre-Hugues Herbert preview

Third seed Ben Shelton will face qualifier Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the second round of the Boss Open in Stuttgart on Jun. 11. The winner of the match will face either eighth seed Jiri Lehecka or Jan-Lennard Struff in the quarterfinals of the ATP 250 event.

Shelton last competed at the French Open, where he beat Italians Lorenzo Sonego and Matteo Gigante to book his place in the fourth round of the tournament for the first time in his career. Here, he put up a valiant fight but lost 6-7(8), 3-6, 6-4, 4-6 to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz. Shelton received a walkover to the second round of the Boss Open by virtue of being one of the top four seeds at the tournament.

Pierre-Hugues Herbert entered the qualifying rounds of the Boss Open after a second-round loss to Joao Fonseca at the French Open. The 34-year-old beat Maximilian Marterer 6-1, 6-1 before triumphing 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-1 over Li Tu to book his place in the main draw of the grass-court event.

Herbert faced Damir Džumhur in the opening round and led 6-4, 3-0 before the Bosnian retired due to injury.

Ben Shelton vs Pierre-Hugues Herbert prediction

Shelton will enter the match as the heavy favorite to win given his considerably better run of form. The American is yet to reach the final of a grass-court tournament in his career but he has a good chance of going deep this time.

Shelton is one of the best servers on tour and he served 55 aces at last year’s Wimbledon, which was his most recent grass-court outing. The World No. 12 is a powerful hitter and will look to finish points quickly and dictate play from the start.

Herbert has a decent serve that has fetched him 32 aces in his three matches so far in Stuttgart. The Frenchman has a pretty good first-serve record in the tournament, winning 71 out of 82 points (86.6%). However, he has also served 22 double faults and will have to be careful not to serve too many of those. Herbert’s doubles experience makes him pretty effective at the net and he will also be eager to play aggressively.

While Shelton can have his slipups, it seems very unlikely that he should have much trouble getting the better of Herbert in Stuttgart.

Prediction: Shelton to win in straight sets.
