Ben Shelton expressed disbelief at the conditions surrounding the 2026 Australian Open. As Melbourne sweltered under one of its most punishing heat waves in recent memory, the eighth seed summed up the mood with a pained reaction on social media. With temperatures soaring to dangerous levels ahead of his quarterfinal clash, Shelton publicly acknowledged the brutal reality facing players at the season’s first Grand Slam.
Ben Shelton Reacts to Scorching Melbourne Conditions
The American is making his fourth appearance at the Australian Open and has once again proven that Melbourne suits his game. Shelton has now reached the quarterfinals for the third time, continuing a steady rise that has turned him into a fixture in the tournament’s second week.
On his path to the last eight, he dismissed France’s Ugo Humbert, powered past Australian qualifier Dane Sweeny, outplayed 30th seed Valentin Vacherot, and then earned a comeback win over 12th seed Casper Ruud. That sequence set up a marquee quarterfinal against two-time defending champion Jannik Sinner.
On the eve of his quarterfinal, he shared a screenshot from his weather app showing the temperature peaking at 44°C (112°F) and added the caption, “Nice 😭.”

The post captured what players and fans had been enduring throughout the opening week. According to tournament officials, temperatures repeatedly pushed toward 40°C (104°F), triggering the Heat Stress Scale at its highest setting. The extreme weather forced organizers into constant adjustments, including closing roofs, delaying start times, rotating ball kids more frequently, and, at times, suspending all outdoor play.
The impact was felt beyond the courts. Matches were halted due to medical emergencies in the stands, including a stoppage during Carlos Alcaraz’s fourth-round win over Tommy Paul at Rod Laver Arena after a spectator required urgent attention. Another scare interrupted Alex de Minaur’s match against Frances Tiafoe, underscoring concerns about the strain on fans packed into Melbourne Park.

The heat has not spared the players either. Defending champion Sinner endured a frightening physical episode against World No. 85 Eliot Spizzirri, suffering full-body cramps while trailing in the third set. Sinner later acknowledged that a timely roof closure gave him a crucial 10-minute recovery window that helped him regroup and escape with the win.
Elsewhere, a five-hour suspension of outdoor play disrupted schedules across the grounds. While some players, including Madison Keys and Jessica Pegula, managed to handle the humidity, others, such as Lorenzo Musetti, saw momentum halted as matches were moved indoors. Tournament officials responded by shortening ball kid shifts and opening gates earlier to help spectators avoid the worst of the late-afternoon heat, measures aimed at protecting fans streaming through the park during the opening week.
Shelton is set to face Sinner for the 10th time on the ATP Tour, with the Italian holding an 8-1 edge in their head-to-head series. The winner will advance to a semifinal against either fifth seed Lorenzo Musetti or fourth seed Novak Djokovic, provided the heat does not have the final say.
