Ben Shelton vs. João Fonseca: Head-to-Head History
This will be the first-ever meeting between these two players on the ATP Tour. Shelton has managed to come through two tough tests to reach the quarterfinals in Munich.
Fonseca has enjoyed a much more comfortable run to the quarterfinals, defeating Alejandro Tabilo in the first round before cruising past Arthur Rinderknech.
The 19-year-old also enjoyed a strong run in Monte-Carlo last week before losing to Alexander Zverev in three tight sets in the quarterfinals.
Shelton, on the other hand, did not have the best of starts to his clay-court swing as he lost to Thiago Agustín Tirante in the quarterfinals in Houston. He needed three sets to overcome compatriot Emilio Nava in the first round in Munich and then eked out a 6-4, 7-6 (8) win over Alexander Blockx on Wednesday.
After making the final in Munich last year, Shelton will be eager to keep his run going at this year’s BMW Open.

Fonseca is playing with plenty of confidence at the moment, and his last three losses on the ATP Tour have come against the top three players in the world. He looks very much at home on clay and will fancy his chances of overcoming Shelton, who is still trying to find his stride on the surface.
After being made to rue unforced errors down the stretch against Zverev in Monte-Carlo, Fonseca has not done much wrong so far in Munich. He was especially dominant against Rinderknech, saving all nine break points. He also broke his opponent’s serve thrice en route to victory.

Shelton delivered a much-improved performance against Blockx but certainly does not feel as comfortable on clay as he does on grass and hard courts. The American struggled with unforced errors against Blockx but saved all three break points he faced en route to a hard-fought win.
This will be a good test of Fonseca’s ability to go toe-to-toe against the top players on tour, and we are backing him to claim a statement win over Shelton on Friday.
