Ahead of Aryna Sabalenka, Nick Kyrgios’ ‘Battle of the Sexes’ Match, Revisiting Mirra Andreeva’s Loss to Men’s Tennis Player

Ahead of Aryna Sabalenka and Nick Kyrgios' match, let us look back at Mirra Andreeva playing against a male player in an exhibition match.

Aryna Sabalenka and Nick Kyrgios facing each other in a “Battle of the Sexes” match is not the first instance of a male and female player competing against each other in recent times. In 2023, Mirra Andreeva played an exhibition match against a male player after her original female opponent, Marta Kostyuk, withdrew from their match.

The Sabalenka-Kyrgios match is organized by their management agency, Evolve, and is scheduled for December 28, 2025, at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai. This exhibition match will feature modified rules designed to level the playing field between the two players.

Mirra Andreeva Lost to a Men’s Tennis Player Ranked 1000 Spots Below Her

Looking back to the most recent encounter between a female and a male player, Andreeva faced Yanis Ghazouani Durand in the final of the 2023 Negometal Open in Bourg-de-Péage, France. Initially, the Russian was set to compete against Kostyuk, but the Ukrainian withdrew from the match due to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

In Kostyuk’s place, tournament organizers enlisted Durand, who was ranked No. 1145 in the ATP rankings. Durand won the match 7-5, 6-2, but Andreeva was awarded the winner’s trophy.

The upcoming Sabalenka-Kyrgios will replicate the iconic “Battle of the Sexes” match that Billie Jean King played against Bobby Riggs at the Houston Astrodome in September 1973. In addition to the Andreeva-Durand, Sabalenka-Kyrgios, and King-Riggs matches, other notable encounters in the Battle of the Sexes series include Riggs vs. Margaret Court in May 1973 and Martina Navratilova vs. Jimmy Connors in September 1992.

Tennis Community Reacts to the Upcoming Aryna Sabalenka-Nick Kyrgios Match

The prevailing sentiment before the Sabalenka and Kyrgios “Battle of the Sexes” match has been that people in the tennis community believe that it will be difficult for a female player to match her male opponent in physical abilities.

Renowned tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou stated, “We know men are stronger, faster, and jump higher than women. You see it across all athletics. It’s not a question. That’s how it is.”

Meanwhile, Garbiñe Muguruza expressed, “Men’s superiority isn’t based solely on power, but also on physical endurance, muscle mass. When I was at my best, being number 1 in the world, I wouldn’t have even beaten a junior (male player).”

Australian coach Roger Rasheed mentioned, “I think it’s a lose-lose for the women’s side… I actually think it’s quite insulting, to be perfectly honest. I don’t see where there’s one minute, one second of win for the number one player in the world. If you are looking after Sabalenka commercially, is this a place where you want to be?”

Looking ahead, Sabalenka, Kyrgios, and Andreeva are set to begin their 2026 seasons at the Brisbane International, which will take place from January 4 to January 11, 2026. The matches of the tournament will be held on outdoor hard courts at the Queensland Tennis Centre in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.
