Nearly two weeks after his triumph in Indian Wells, Jannik Sinner defeated Jiří Lehečka convincingly in straight sets to win the Miami Open and created history to become the eighth man in history to complete the Sunshine Double. Sinner’s achievement was later celebrated by WTA world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, who herself achieved the same feat after defeating Coco Gauff in the final.
Aryna Sabalenka Reacts As Jannik Sinner’s Miami Open Triumph Seals Shared Milestone
After a 90-minute rain delay pushed back the start, Jannik Sinner wasted little time asserting control once play got underway. The Italian dismantled Jiří Lehečka’s previously unbroken run at the tournament and set the tone early.
The four-time Grand Slam Champion was flawless behind his first serve in the opening set, winning all 16 points, and never allowed the match to drift out of his grasp. He consistently came out on top in forehand exchanges, pinning Lehečka into uncomfortable positions and forcing him to strike above shoulder height. While Lehečka showed intent at the net, he struggled to disrupt Sinner’s rhythm from the baseline.
All-in-all, the Italian churned out a composed performance to seal the 6-4, 6-4 triumph, becoming the first man since Roger Federer in 2017 to complete the Sunshine Double, a rare feat achieved by winning the BNP Paribas Open and the Miami Open in the same season.

It was a landmark achievement for Sinner, something Sabalenka could appreciate better than many, as she too completed the Sunshine Double with a win over Coco Gauff on Saturday, becoming the fifth woman to achieve the feat. The Belarusian shared a picture of Sinner celebrating the winning moment on her Instagram story and wrote, “Forza Jannik Sinner. Sunshine Double.”

Sinner and Sabalenka also became the 4th man & woman to win the Sunshine Double simultaneously. Steffi Graf & Pete Sampras were the first pair to complete in 1994, Kim Clijsters & Roger Federer did so in 2005, followed by Victoria Azarenka & Novak Djokovic in 2016.

Sinner also stretched his streak to 34 consecutive sets won at the ATP Masters 1000 level, a surge that began at last year’s Paris Masters. The Italian has now compiled a dominant record this season, and remains 1,190 points behind Alcaraz in the PIF ATP Live Rankings. With momentum firmly on Sinner’s side, the race for the top spot is poised to gather pace heading into the European clay swing.
