Aryna Sabalenka suffered a heartbreaking loss at Wimbledon 2025 on Thursday. The top seed fell to American Amanda Anisimova in three sets during their semifinal clash. Sabalenka seemed to be in control after taking the second set, but the American held her nerve to pull of an incredible win.
Aryna Sabalenka’s Emotional Press Conference After Wimbledon Exit
Sabalenka spoke about her defeat in her post-match press conference, stating:
“Losing sucks. You always feel like you want to die, you don’t want to exist anymore, and this is the end of your life. But then you sit there a little bit and you think about what you could have done differently on the match and you see stuff where you wasn’t at your best in the match and you see that the other player perform much better and you can see things better.”
Sabalenka reflected on her dream to win her first Wimbledon title, saying:
“But the first moment is always the worst one because every time you compete at the tournament and you get to these last stages, you think that you’re getting close to your dream and then you lose the match and you feel like, okay, this is the end.”
Aryna Sabalenka vs Amanda Anisimova: Another American Upset for the Belarusian
The semifinal clash between Sabalenka and Anisimova was a classic three-set battle on Centre Court. Anisimova started strong, taking the first set 6-4 but the World No. 1 responded by taking the second set by the same margin, forcing the match into a decider.
In the final set, Anisimova broke Sabalenka early to take a 3-1 lead. The American then built a commanding 5-2 advantage before Sabalenka fought back to 5-4. However, Anisimova held her nerve, closing out the match on her fourth match point with a forehand winner
The defeat marked the third consecutive Grand Slam this year for Aryna Sabalenka which ended with a defeat to an American player, having previously lost to Madison Keys and Coco Gauff in the Australian Open and French Open finals, respectively.
Sabalenka, who has won 47 out of 56 matches so far in the 2025 season, is next scheduled to compete at the Canadian Open. The World No. 1’s best performance at the WTA 1000 event was reaching the semifinals in 2021. She reached the quarterfinals of the tournament last year before losing to eventual runner-up Amanda Anisimova.
