‘There Is Somebody More Important Than Yourself’ – Angelique Kerber on Being a Mother

After giving birth to her daughter Liana, Kerber spoke about her experience of motherhood with WTA Insider. She expressed that before becoming a mother, she felt more “relaxed” about life, but now her child’s well-being is always on her mind.
“On court, I’m a little bit more relaxed with everything, which when I’m looking back, was not always the case. So this [being a mother] changed a little bit. As a mom, it’s different. I always have it in my mind,” Kerber said.

The former World No. 1 shared that having her daughter made her realize there is someone more important than herself, and that realization has motivated her to be better.

“I think I will never be in the mode like I was before. It’s really changed. You have it always in your mind. Even if you step on court, you have in your thoughts that you’re still not alone, that there is somebody more important than yourself, and you have it in your mind. But this is also maybe giving you a little bit more motivation,” she added.

Kerber’s last competition was at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she defeated Naomi Osaka, Jaqueline Cristian, and Leylah Fernandez. She lost to the eventual gold medalist, Zheng Qinwen, in the quarterfinals before announcing her retirement from tennis.
