Andy Roddick Urges Emma Raducanu To Keep New Coach and Not ‘Flip and Fire Someone’ Following Wimbledon Exit

Emma Raducanu’s Wimbledon journey came to an end in the third round, but her performance caught the attention of 2003 US Open Champion, Andy Roddick. The Brit was knocked out by World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 7-6 (8), 6-4 after two hours of play.

Despite the loss, Raducanu was impressive throughout her campaign, including a standout victory over 2023 Wimbledon champion Markéta Vondroušová in the second round.

Andy Roddick Comments on Emma Raducanu’s Impressive Wimbledon Campaign

Roddick, speaking on the latest segment of his “Quick Served”, expressed his admiration for Raducanu’s play and made a strong plea for her to maintain her coaching partnership with Mark Petchey.

The former US Open champion was particularly impressed with how Raducanu handled the match against Vondroušová, which many didn’t expect to go so smoothly in her favor: “I thought Emma played well. I think she played well this tournament, obviously, the match against Vondroušová, I did not see it going that handily towards Raducanu.”

Roddick’s most important message was about coaching stability, and he made a direct appeal: “And if I had one request leaving this tournament, please stay with Mark Petchey. It’s working. You’ve looked better and better each time. Petchey’s a really good coach. You seem to have a great camaraderie. Don’t flip and fire someone and start over again and do the whole thing. Keep this continuity.”

The American was also impressed by Raducanu’s playing style and technical abilities and said, “It’s really fun to watch her play because she’s never going to have to hit the biggest shot on the court, but she’s great at switching directions. Her shot tolerance is fantastic. Her ability to mix up spins, play almost a slow roller, and hold it to the last minute.”

The coaching partnership between Raducanu and Petchey has been building momentum since March 2025. Petchey, a former British number one and Andy Murray’s former coach, initially joined Raducanu’s team on an informal basis at the Miami Open.

This arrangement has proved beneficial, as Raducanu reached her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal in Miami.

Petchey previously coached Murray from June 2005 to April 2006, helping him rise from World No. 351 to World No. 41 and win his first ATP title. He also coached WTA players Silvija Talaja to the world’s top 20 and Tina Pisnik to the top 30.

At Wimbledon, the results spoke for themselves. Raducanu defeated former champion Vondroušová 6-3, 6-3 in what many considered one of her best performances in years. She then pushed Sabalenka to the limit in their third-round encounter.
