Andre Agassi recently shared a personal story about his family’s current struggle with aging parents. In a recent interview, the eight-time Grand Slam champion spoke about how his mother and his wife Steffi Graf’s mother experienced serious health issues around the same time.
The tennis couple, married since 2001, are now dealing with the challenges of caring for elderly parents while trying to teach their children important lessons about family responsibility.
Health Challenges Hit Both Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf’s Families
Agassi’s family has faced significant health battles over the years, especially with his mother, Elizabeth, a breast cancer survivor. In 2000, both Elizabeth and Agassi’s sister, Tami, were diagnosed with breast cancer within six months of each other.
Elizabeth underwent a mastectomy and chemotherapy, with the family rallying around her during the difficult stretch. The experience had a major impact on Agassi’s tennis performance at the time, as he struggled to stay focused during tournaments. Now, decades later, the family is facing new challenges after both mothers suffered falls that led to hospital stays.
According to Agassi’s recent interview, his mother-in-law fell just before his own mother did. Remarkably, they ended up in hospital rooms just one door apart over Christmas.
“My wife’s mom just had a fall just before my mom did. And they were one hospital room away from each other over Christmas. And we were there every day, and we’re still there every day,” Agassi said.
Andre Agassi Teaching Life Lessons to His Kids Through Difficult Times
Agassi sees this tough time as a teaching opportunity for his children, Jaden and Jaz. He believes showing them how to care for aging parents is a key lesson that will help them prepare for the future — especially when it’s their turn to care for him and Graf.
“The kids come and visit. I look at it like, I need to take care of my parents so my kids understand what they’re going to have to do for me,” Agassi said, laughing.

Both Agassi and Graf have made it clear that family comes first — even ahead of their legendary tennis careers.
Reflecting on raising kids, Agassi said, “We’re all in process. We’re all growing. We’re all learning. And they never stop. But honestly, it’s part of raising children. So I think them seeing the challenges of negotiating your day.”r stop. But honestly, it’s part of raising children. So I think them seeing the challenges of negotiating your day.”
