The 2025 Madrid Open reignited concerns about the American men’s performance on clay, with Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe, and Tommy Paul all bowing out together in the fourth round.
The Madrid Open marked Fritz’s first appearance on clay in the 2025 season. However, he couldn’t make an impact in the Spanish capital. Fritz started his campaign by defeating Christopher O’Connell in the second round, before getting past Benjamin Bonzi in the third round in straight sets.
However, Fritz couldn’t carry the momentum against Casper Ruud in the fourth round and fell 5-7, 4-6. This was Ruud’s 17th triumph against a top 10 player.

Paul, meanwhile, entered Madrid on the back of a semifinal run at the ATP 250 event in Houston. After surviving a grueling second-round battle against João Fonseca, he defeated Karen Khachanov 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 in the third round. However, the 11th seed was unable to resist the sheer dominance of Jack Draper in the fourth round, falling 2-6, 2-6.
The victory marked Draper’s first appearance in a Masters 1000 quarterfinal on clay and his first win over a top-30 opponent on the surface.
Like his compatriots, Tiafoe also looked good in his first two encounters, where he got past Luciano Darderi and Alexandre Müller in straight sets. However, Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi dispatched the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship finalist with ease, 6-3, 7-5, in the fourth round.
Other American men, including Ben Shelton, Sebastian Korda, and Brandon Nakashima, couldn’t impress at the Masters 1000 event. Shelton exited the tournament in the third round after falling to Jakub Mensik, Nakashima fell to Daniil Medvedev in the fourth round, while Korda lost to Ruud in the third round.
How Ben Shelton Surpassed Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, and Frances Tiafoe In One WayÂ
Ben Shelton had a stellar campaign at the BMW Open in Munich. The 22-year-old defeated Borna Gojo in the first, Botic van de Zandschulp in the second, before eliminating Italy’s Luciano Darderi 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinals to reach the semifinals of the ATP 500 event.
Shelton made history by becoming the first American man to reach the semifinals of an ATP 500 clay-court tournament since the series began in 2009, thus surpassing Fritz, Paul, and Tiafoe.

Shelton, who was the No. 2 seed in the tournament, later defeated Francisco Cerúndolo 2-6, 7-6 (7), 6-4 to reach the final. There, he fell to Alexander Zverev 6-2, 6-4.
Clay courts have long posed a challenge for American men, with no player from the country lifting the French Open trophy since Andre Agassi’s triumph in 1999. The only American to win an ATP tour title on clay this season is Jenson Brooksby. The wildcard qualifier secured the Clay Court Championship in Houston by defeating compatriot Tiafoe 6-4, 6-2.
