In a match that swung violently in momentum and emotion, the 20-year-old Filipina escaped with a 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(5) win over Aliaksandra Sasnovich and later revealed she leaned on sheer fight, crowd energy, and belief when everything felt on the verge of slipping away.

The match unfolded in sharp swings. Sasnovich set the tone in the opening set with nearly 70% first serves in play and won 88% of those points, shutting down Eala’s return game and exposing her second serve, where she won just three of seven points.

The match began to turn when Eala committed to longer rallies in the second set, absorbing pace and testing Sasnovich’s legs. Although both players leaked errors, Eala created 12 break points and converted two, including a pivotal break at 4-4 that helped her take the set.

The third set was the emotional peak. Sasnovich raced ahead 4-0 and later served for the match at 5-2, even holding match point. Eala stayed aggressive, finished at the net to stay alive, and rode the crowd’s growing energy into a tiebreak. After trailing 5-4, she won three straight points to seal the comeback and collapsed in relief.

How Did Eala Explain the Mindset Behind Her Dramatic Comeback?

The magnitude of the moment was clear in her on-court interview. “These moments are moments I only have dreamed about,” Eala said, soaking in the atmosphere. “Selling out stadiums is insane and being in these matches in particular are just really the ones that kind of stick with you. And I’ve had a lot of them in the past year, so I’m really happy with this win.”

She later emphasized the internal battle that defined the comeback. “I really tried my best in those moments to fight,” she said. “I really tried to find the fight. And in the end, I think when I was coming back, I was able to find it. So I’m really proud of that.”

Eala expanded further in her post-match press conference after a reporter asked how much she notices the fans during tense moments. Eala made it clear that the crowd played a role. “Today, it definitely helped me,” Eala said. “I was really close to going home, and I think I had to take out all the tools I could. The crowd helped me a lot to keep the energy up and really fight.”

The win sent her into the quarterfinals, where she is set to face world No. 11 Ekaterina Alexandrova. It will mark their first-ever matchup on the WTA Tour, and the winner will advance to a semifinal clash against either fifth seed Liudmila Samsonova or Hailey Baptiste.

Eala is also still alive in the doubles draw alongside Janice Tjen. The duo earned a hard-fought 7-5, 3-6, 10-6 victory over Leylah Fernandez and Kristina Mladenovic to book a place in the quarterfinals, where they are scheduled to take on second seeds Zhang Shuai and Cristina Bucșa.
