After stunning second seed Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals, the Filipina has comfortably booked her ticket to the final four. Her next challenge is four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka, and fans are eager for the very first career meeting between the two fan favorites. And the 21-year-old is very confident about playing against one of the icons of the sport, whom she greatly respects.
Alexandra Eala Delivers Confident Message Ahead of Naomi Osaka DC Open Semifinal
Eala secured her spot in the semifinals with a commanding 6-3, 6-4 victory over world No. 10 Svitolina under the Friday night lights. Interestingly, the match had the exact same scoreline as her victory against the Ukrainian veteran on grass in Berlin in June. This win marks Eala’s third semifinal appearance and her sixth victory over a top-10 opponent in 2026.
Meanwhile, the third-seeded Osaka had to fight back from a 4-6 first set to oust Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto and won 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
When asked by WTA about how electric the atmosphere will be given their massive followings, Eala shared her excitement for the semifinal on Saturday:
“Yeah, I think it’s going to be super exciting. I know the crowd is gonna really show up for both of us. I hope that I can give her a tough time. But yeah, I’m expecting a tough match, and I’ll do my best to be prepared for that.”
The incredible popularity of both comes from their historic careers on the global stage. Osaka is the first Asian player to reach the World No. 1 ranking in singles and the first Japanese player to capture a Grand Slam singles title. As a four-time major champion and global cultural icon, she inspires a new generation. And Eala is already writing her own story as the highest-ranked Filipino player in WTA Tour history.
In her on-court interview after the quarterfinal, Eala showed her admiration for the 2020 US Open champion. “She’s, of course, such an accomplished player. I think she’s made waves on and off the tennis court for so many reasons. There’s so much respect for her for that.”

However, playing against a former World No. 1 who has won all her majors on hard court can be overwhelming, but Eala maintains a clear and competitive mindset.
“Of course, you’re going to do everything you can to win. But you have to expect that she’s going to make it difficult for you, and you have to do your best to make it difficult for her,” Eala said in the latest presser in Washington. “You’re trying to make the other person uncomfortable. They’re trying to do the same. And it’s just a back and forth, right?”
Looking ahead, all eyes are on their semifinal clash today. The winner will advance directly to the final, where they will face either top-seeded Jessica Pegula or Diana Shnaider.
