Alexander Zverev Opens Up About His United Cup Decision Which Differed From Casper Ruud

For the 2026 United Cup, Germany has been placed in Group F alongside Team Poland and Team Netherlands. The German team began their campaign by facing the Dutch team. Lys earned Germany’s first point by defeating Suzan Lamens in a singles match. Zverev followed, securing another point for his team by triumphing over Tallon Griekspoor.

In the mixed doubles match, after his singles match, Zverev partnered with Siegemund to defeat the Dutch pair of Demi Schuurs and Griekspoor, resulting in a 3-0 victory for Germany over the Netherlands.

During the post-match press conference, Zverev was asked if it was challenging to play a mixed doubles match after participating in his singles match. The reporter also mentioned that Ruud chose not to compete in the mixed doubles match for Norway against Australia after his singles match, when the teams were tied 1-1.

Norway subsequently lost the mixed doubles match and ultimately fell to Australia 2-1.

In response, the former World No. 2 stated that he wouldn’t speak for Ruud regarding his decision not to play in the mixed doubles match for Norway. He explained that he played for Germany because it wasn’t a decisive match and he felt more prepared to compete.

Zverev acknowledged that he hadn’t played many mixed doubles matches before and stated that if it had been a deciding match, he would have considered his decision more carefully.

“But for me today, I mean, if it’s going to be 1-All, I decide to play, I just need to play one mixed doubles beforehand. Going out there in an important match, a deciding match, something like that, is very difficult if you haven’t played in a long time. That was the decision behind it. I can’t speak for Casper. I’m sure he had good reasons not to play. I don’t know them. It’s better to ask him that question,” Zverev said.

Looking ahead, Zverev is scheduled to face Hubert Hurkacz in a singles match when Germany takes on Poland. The two players have met four times on the ATP Tour, with the former World No. 2 winning three of those encounters. Their most recent match occurred in the semifinals of the 2024 Halle Open, where the Pole claimed victory.
