Alex Michelsen vs Daniil Medvedev Preview

Third seed Daniil Medvedev will take on Alex Michelsen in the quarterfinals of the Halle Open. The Russian has won 21 out of 33 matches so far this season, with his most notable performances being reaching the semifinals of the Indian Wells Masters and the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open.

Medvedev’s performances have been anything but impressive so far in 2025, and these saw him drop out of the Top 10 of the ATP rankings. The 29-year-old started his grass season with a quarterfinal exit at the Libèma Open. He has done well so far in Halle, reaching the quarterfinals after straight-set wins over Daniel Altmaier and Quentin Halys.

Alex Michelsen has won 16 out of 30 matches so far in the 2025 season, reaching the semifinals of the Delray Beach Open and the fourth round of the Australian Open. The American entered the grass-court season at the back of a four-match losing streak, which came to an end at the Boss Open.

Michelsen lost to Justin Engel in the very next round of the tournament. He then competed at the Halle Open and started with a hard-fought 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 win over fifth seed Francisco Cerúndolo. The American then beat Stefanos 7-6(5), 7-5 to book his place in the quarterfinals of the ATP 500 event.

The only encounter between the two came in the third round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, with Medvedev veing adjudged the winner after Michelsen retired due to injury after just a couple of games.

Alex Michelsen vs Daniil Medvedev Prediction

Medvedev hasn’t been in the best of form this season but he has a better tally so far in 2025 compared to Michelsen. However, the American is a rising talent and has already reached two finals on grass. So, he cannot be written off.

Medvedev was impressive on his first serve during his last match, winning 29 out of 32 points. He also produced 22 winners compared to just six unforced errors. The Russian served 17 aces in his two matches and will look to fetch as many free points as he can against Michelsen.

Medvedev’s game borders around efficiency and he has a good blend of offense and defense. The Russian also has a decent return, which will come in handy against Michelsen, who is a good server.

The American has served 11 aces so far in Halle, winning 84 out of 109 points on his first serve. However, he has produced 49 unforced errors and cannot afford to have too many of those against Medvedev. Composure will be crucial for Michelsen as the Russian has not been at his best and if the American can be psychologically sound during the match, he could have a chance of winning.

While Michelsen winning would not be a surprise at all, Medvedev has a good chance of coming out on top if he is at his best.

Prediction: Daniil Medvedev to win in three sets.
