After ‘Inferior’ Opponents, Former Pros Warn Novak Djokovic About Jannik Sinner Threat in Australian Open SF

Former pros shared their thoughts on Novak Djokovic's game ahead of his semifinal match against Jannik Sinner at the 2026 Australian Open.

Novak Djokovic has reached the semifinals of the 2026 Australian Open, where he will face two-time defending champion Jannik Sinner. Ahead of this match, Jamie Murray and Tim Henman shared their thoughts, suggesting that the Serb needs to improve his performance, as he has faced “inferior” and inexperienced opponents in the rounds leading up to the semifinals.

Djokovic and Sinner have met 10 times on the ATP Tour previously, with the Italian winning six of those encounters. Their most recent clash was in the semifinals of the 2025 Wimbledon Championships, where Sinner secured a 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 win.

Jamie Murray & Tim Henman Share Their Thoughts on Novak Djokovic Facing Jannik Sinner at Australian Open SF

Seeded fourth at the 2026 Australian Open, Djokovic began his campaign by defeating Pedro Martínez and qualifier Francesco Maestrelli in the first and second rounds, respectively. He then eliminated Botic van de Zandschulp in the third round and advanced to the quarterfinals after his fourth-round opponent, 16th seed Jakub Menšík, withdrew due to an abdominal injury.

In the quarterfinals, the 24-time Grand Slam champion took on fifth seed Lorenzo Musetti, losing the first two sets 4-6 and 3-6. However, during the third set, while leading 3-1, Musetti retired from the match, with the score at 6-4, 6-4, 1-3 (retd.) due to a torn adductor in his right leg.

Musetti’s retirement allowed Djokovic to progress to the semifinals, where he will meet second-seeded Sinner. Speaking to TNT Sports ahead of the match, Murray stated that Djokovic must deliver a “career-level performance” and exert a “mammoth effort” to defeat Sinner.

“Djoko has to come with a career-level performance to beat Sinner in this form on hard courts. We’ll find out if he’s got it in him. It’s going to take a mammoth effort to get past Jannik at this stage,” Murray said.

Henman echoed Murray’s sentiment, expressing that in his current form, Djokovic needs to “raise” his game against Sinner, noting that he played “ordinary” tennis in the quarterfinals, which led to him dropping two sets.

Henman also mentioned that the Serb’s previous matches were against far “inferior opponents,” which is why he was able to secure those wins.

“I’m not looking massively into the head-to-head. What I am looking into is their current form. Djokovic has to seriously raise his game. He was very ordinary for two sets today and that’s why he lost them. He’s played okay in the previous rounds, but they were against far inferior opponents. If Djokovic is going to have any kind of impact against Sinner, he’s going to have to play a lot, lot better,” Henman said.

Meanwhile, Sinner advanced to the semifinals after defeating Hugo Gaston, wild card James Duckworth, Eliot Spizzirri, fellow Italian, 22nd seed Luciano Darderi, and eighth seed Ben Shelton.

The winner of the semifinal match between Sinner and Djokovic at the Melbourne Major will advance to face either top seed Carlos Alcaraz or third seed Alexander Zverev in the final.
