Tennessee Titans vs. Miami Dolphins Game Preview
It’s a bit absurd to call any September game a must-win, but this one comes close. The Titans at 0-4 would be buried. The Dolphins at 1-3 could write off any dream of winning the division with three months to play.
Neither team is particularly good right now.
The Dolphins have not led for a single second this season. Their only win came when they beat the Jaguars on a walk-off field goal after being tied or behind for the game’s first 59 minutes and 59 seconds.
The Dolphins need a fast start Monday. They’ve trailed by double digits in all three games this year, and their -39 point differential is third-worst in the league.
This is the 41st all-time meeting between the Dolphins and Titans. Miami holds the all-time series edge 21-19. The Titans have won their last two matchups against Miami, including a 2023 Monday night thriller in which the Dolphins blew a two-touchdown home lead in the game’s final three minutes to lose 28-27.
The Dolphins as of Saturday were 1.5-point home favorites in a game with an over/under of 37. The moneylines? -122 for the Dolphins; +102 for the Titans.
PFN’s predictions, plus seven more key stats courtesy of TruMedia, are below.
Seven Titans-Dolphins Stats From TruMedia
Stat: In 10 games without Tua Tagovailoa as their starting QB since 2021, the Dolphins have posted a positive offensive EPA once.
Analysis: Huntley should be an upgrade over Skylar Thompson and Tim Boyle, who together directed an offense that produced a -25.2 EPA in Week 3, their worst offensive showing in the Mike McDaniel era.
Stat: The Titans blitzed 40% of the time in Week 3, their highest rate since 2021 and nearly double their 21% average from the first two weeks.
Analysis: Including the postseason, Huntley in his career has completed 66.4% of his passes, with a 6.5 yards-per-attempt average, three touchdowns, and three interceptions (82.2 rating).
Stat: The Titans rank last in EPA per dropback (-0.31). In the last five seasons, only the New York Jets (three different times!) have had a worse EPA per dropback through three games.
Analysis: No matter what the Titans have tried with Levis, it hasn’t worked. His average depth of throw is down 2.6 yards year over year, his completion percentage is up 9.7% — and yet he’s still 30th in QBR (30.2).
Stat: For the second time in the past 20 years, the Titans are 0-3 against the spread through three weeks.
Analysis: The Dolphins at home in September under McDaniel have usually been a pretty safe bet, but there’s nothing normal about this year.
Stat: The Titans have lost 11 of their last 12 road games and have been out-scored 289-158 across those contests (by an average of 10.9 points per game).
Analysis: The Dolphins have lost nine straight Week 4 games and have been outscored 270-113 across those games (every other team has multiple Week 4 wins over that run – the Titans are 4-3, which is the 10th-best Week 4 win percentage).
Stat: Wrapping up ball carriers has been a problem for the Dolphins. Miami is allowing the fourth-fewest yards before contact per rush (0.9), but the fifth-most yards after contact per rush (3.9).
Analysis: This issue will only exacerbate if linebacker David Long Jr. — the Dolphins’ best run-stopper — misses the game with a hamstring injury.
Stat: Under McDaniel, the Dolphins are just 2-8 against the spread in prime time (playoffs included) with five straight failures to cover. Unders are 8-2 in those games (5-1 in the past six such games).
Analysis: The country just two weeks ago got to see the Buffalo Bills blow the doors off the Dolphins in prime time. If it happens again, big changes are needed.
