One of the more intriguing storylines of the 2025 NFL Draft has been the draft slide of Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders. After having a first-round grade, he was not drafted in the first two days of the draft. Senior NFL Reporter Albert Breer posted on social media why he believes teams do not want Shedeur Sanders as a backup quarterback.
“He’s still available now because of everything else. At this point of the draft, teams are looking for depth and developmental players. If you’re taken in the third round or fourth round or fifth round, you’re going to be working in the background. That would make Shedeur a backup quarterback.”
“Backup QBs need to blend with in the furniture. It’s why Tim Tebow and Colin Kaepernick, and even guys like Jay Cutler and Cam Newton had trouble extending their careers- if those guys weren’t going to start for you, you’d probably rather just have the anonymous guy who’d support the starter and make ZERO headlines.”
It will be interesting to see how far into Day 3 of the 2025 NFL Draft Sanders will continue to fall.
New York Giants Had a Bad Interview With Shedeur Sanders
One of the teams that was seemingly linked to drafting Sanders was the New York Giants, and it was one of the more realistic landing spots for the Colorado quarterback. However, the team decided to trade back up later in the first round on Thursday and selected Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart instead.
On his ‘The McShay Show’ podcast, NFL insider Todd McShay revealed the two sides had an interview as coach Brian Daboll called out the quarterback for not being prepared for an install package. After that, things splintered as Sanders reportedly did not like the exchange.
While it is unknown if some of the quotes that came out from anonymous team personnel ahead of the draft included members of the New York Giants, there is definitely the possibility that word of this meeting spread and could have created some concern regarding Sanders’ draftability.
Sanders certainly had showcased the ability to play well on the field as he won the 2024 Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year by completing 353 of 477 (74.0%) of his passes for 4,134 yards with 37 passing touchdowns to 10 interceptions. However, it appears that issues outside of what he can do during the four quarters of play have caused NFL decision-makers to be more hesitant about what he can be at the next level.
