Travis Kelce's costly drop vs. the Eagles sparked viral criticism, with Skip Bayless putting the entire blame on Kelce for the loss.

The noise inside Arrowhead Stadium was electric. Everyone was watching, wondering if the Kansas City Chiefs could finally flip the script against the Philadelphia Eagles in a rematch of last season’s biggest game. All eyes were on Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and a Chiefs team facing big questions just two weeks into the 2024-25 campaign. But it wasn’t just about football. How Did the Philadelphia Eagles Upset Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs?

Week 2 of the NFL season had plenty of drama, but nothing topped the Super Bowl rematch between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles, coming off their championship run, once again found a way to spoil the night for Mahomes and company, leaving Arrowhead Stadium with another statement win. For Kansas City, this loss hit even harder, not only because it dropped the Chiefs to 0-2 for the first time since 2014, but also because of how it happened.

The turning point came late in the fourth quarter. Trailing 13-10, Mahomes drove the team deep into the red zone, looking to reclaim the lead. On second-and-goal from the Eagles’ six-yard line, he fired what looked like a routine short throw to his most trusted target, Kelce. The crowd looked ready to erupt momentarily until Kelce let the ball slip through his hands.

Instead of six points, it turned into an interception by Eagles rookie Andrew Mukuba. What should have been a go-ahead touchdown quickly became heartbreaking, and momentum never returned to Kansas City’s favor.

It was rare for Chiefs fans to see Kelce–the usual sure thing–come up short in such a huge spot. But for sports commentator Skip Bayless, it was more than just a bad drop. He called it the play that decided the game.

Bayless took to X with an 11-minute rant, laying the loss directly at Kelce’s feet.

“I’m going to say it right here right now,” Bayless posted. “Travis Kelce dropped the game at Arrowhead. The reason why the Chiefs lost was because Travis Kelce dropped a touchdown pass at the goal line that I believe would have put the Chiefs in position to win the football game… Mr. Taylor Swift dropped the ball.”

Why Is Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift’s Engagement Fueling Even More Debate?

That last line blew up online. Just weeks ago, Kelce and Swift announced their engagement, turning the NFL star into one half of America’s most talked-about couple. Bayless didn’t shy away from connecting that kind of celebrity buzz to his critique, suggesting that Kelce’s star status shields him from tougher football criticism.

As a result, that instant became the story of the game. For Kansas City, the loss now means searching for answers as the team tries to fight out of an early-season hole.

Because of his reputation as Swift’s fiancé and Mahomes’ preferred target, Kelce’s one mistake is now a headline. To Bayless, that makes the blame even bigger.
