The scandal involving New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel and former NFL reporter Dianna Russini still lingers in the back of fans’ minds, as both have largely avoided the public eye since issuing their initial denials. Since the photos and videos of the pair surfaced online, more serious allegations about the affair have emerged.
Secrecy Around Dianna Russini, Mike Vrabel Scandal Raises a Lot of Suspicion
The Vrabel-Russini scandal overwhelmed the NFL world to the point that the 2026 NFL Draft received far less coverage than the pair’s affair. Internet sleuths dug up past clips, videos, and comments that added even more color to a story that was already publicized through secret footage of their interactions.
Regarding the media’s coverage of the topic, however, red flags have been raised about how the scandal is covered. The awkward moment of friction between Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio and Chris Simms alluded to a deeper level of the controversy that the media avoids.
NFL podcaster Tony Farmer dove deep into the scandal and made some interesting observations, including the suppression of information that Russini might have voted for Vrabel for the Coach of the Year award last season.
“Google Dianna Russini, find mainstream media articles, and try to find one mainstream source that talks about Dianna Russini being a Coach of the Year voter,” he said. “Pro Football Talk is probably the only one you’re gonna find. When ESPN talks about it, the rare time that they do, they won’t mention that she’s a Coach of the Year voter. It’s a taboo subject, and there’s secrecy around this taboo subject.”
There are numerous ethical leaks related to the affair, and the lack of transparency in the case leads many to believe there are several skeletons in the closet.
“And it’s not just the Associated Press,” Farmer continued. “How about The Athletic? The Athletic is now doing this ‘lengthy’ investigation into Dianna Russini’s conduct. The Associated Press won’t even tell us if they plan on releasing the results of that investigation, which is shady by the way, because they could be setting up a situation where it’s like, ‘Let’s see how this thing goes, if the investigation looks favorable to us, The Athletic, we’ll release it.'”
Russini resigned from The Athletic shortly after the details of the alleged affair went public. When prompted to provide evidence of her innocence, she reportedly failed to do so.

“If we find out that supervisors at The Athletic were encouraging Dianna Russini to get very close with Mike Vrabel, maybe we don’t want that out there, so how about we just don’t tell the public whether we’re gonna release it or not,” Farmer added. “And then we can decide that after we get the results of the investigation. Not very transparent. Super shady.”
Experts aren’t optimistic that the public will see the investigation’s results, given how compromising it could be to key entities. Nonetheless, fans and analysts alike will continue to keep an eye out for more to this story as we approach the new season.
