Bad Bunny Went From Puerto Rico to a Global Platform

Bad Bunny is Puerto Rican. He was born in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, and grew up in Vega Baja. Vega Baja is a coastal municipality west of San Juan. A municipality is a city or town that has corporate status and local government. Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory. People born there are American citizens.

He began making music while attending the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo. Like many young artists of the 2010s, he uploaded early recordings to SoundCloud and gained popularity through streaming. His early tracks blended reggaeton and Latin trap. Those unique sounds helped introduce his music beyond Puerto Rico. Wider attention followed in 2016 with the songs “Diles” and “Soy Peor.”

His 2025 album “Debí Tirar Más Fotos” opened at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Last Sunday, he won Album of the Year at the 2026 Grammy Awards for “Debí Tirar Más Fotos,” the first Spanish‑language album to receive that honor.

Outside of music, Bad Bunny has remained visible in sports and entertainment. He is considered a WWE Superstar. Bad Bunny competed in the 2021 Royal Rumble and at Backlash Puerto Rico in 2023. He also played in the 2022 MLB All-Star Celebrity Softball Game and is listed as a co-owner of Los Cangrejeros de Santurce, a professional basketball club in Puerto Rico.

Historic Super Bowl Halftime Show is Expected

A professor at Virginia Tech said the performance could mark a notable moment because it is expected to be delivered entirely in Spanish. Craig Arthur, who teaches hip-hop studies at Virginia Tech, said Bad Bunny’s popularity stems from a consistent public identity.

“Bad Bunny’s appeal is deeply tied to his uncompromised authenticity,” Arthur said in the university’s publication news.vt.edu. “He unabashedly is who he is, and he is not afraid to speak his mind. He challenged staid norms in reggaeton and, arguably, popular music in terms of his style as an artist as well as his fashion sense and politics.”

Sunday will mark his first appearance as a Super Bowl halftime headliner. He previously joined the 2020 halftime show as a guest performer alongside Shakira and Jennifer Lopez. The NFL announced its 2026 selection in September, in partnership with Apple Music and Roc Nation.

Super Bowl 60 will be played at Levi’s Stadium between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots and will air on NBC and Peacock. Bad Bunny’s halftime set is expected to last about 12 to 15 minutes, the standard window for recent Super Bowl shows.
