The Miami Dolphins made a star receiver a free agent on Monday. Tyreek Hill’s release by the Dolphins has reopened discussion about where the former All-Pro wide receiver could land next. In Kansas City, where Hill spent the first six seasons of his career, the idea of a reunion has surfaced publicly. One former Super Bowl champion is firmly against it.
Willie Colon Says Chiefs Must Avoid Letting Nostalgia Dictate Roster Decisions
During a segment on FS1’s “First Things First,” Willie Colon addressed the idea of Kansas City bringing back Tyreek Hill following Hill’s release by the Miami Dolphins. Colon, who won Super Bowl 43 with the Pittsburgh Steelers, focused on why the fit doesn’t align with what’s best for the Chiefs.
“We got to be careful. Nostalgia will get you in trouble,” Colon said. “You’re talking about a quarterback coming off a major knee injury… If you’re the Chiefs right now, you have some serious cap issues.”
Colon referenced Kansas City’s pending free agents at wide receiver, including Marquise Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster, and said the organization should prioritize retaining core pieces.
Uncertainty also surrounds Kansas City’s core entering the offseason. Kelce has not stated whether he will return for the 2026 season. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is rehabbing from a torn ACL suffered in a loss to the Chargers on December 14, 2025, in Week 15, and his availability for Week 1 remains unclear.

“I think if you’re the Chiefs right now, you have to focus all your attention on getting Travis Kelce back in the building because he was the ultimate security blanket for Patrick Mahomes,” Colon said. He also mentioned linebacker Leo Chenal as a player he believes the Chiefs should prioritize retaining.
Hill played in Kansas City from 2016 through 2021, recording 479 receptions for 6,630 yards and 56 receiving touchdowns. He helped the franchise win Super Bowl 54 before being traded to Miami in 2022.

The Dolphins released Hill on Monday, creating $22.9 million in salary cap space. He is recovering from a dislocated knee and torn ACL suffered in Week 4 of the 2025 season.
Speculation about Hill’s future will be widespread. He is expected to be in demand but at the right price. Hill must also pass a health physical before being cleared to return to action.
