Stephen A. Smith recently addressed what he described as “staggering evidence against” former NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez, who now faces serious charges after a violent altercation in Indianapolis.
The 38-year-old ex-quarterback was reportedly involved in a chaotic early Saturday morning incident while in the city to cover the Raiders-Colts game as a sports analyst. Smith publicly remarked on the developing case and the growing evidence reportedly linked to Sanchez’s involvement.
What Did Stephen A. Smith Reveal on Mark Sanchez’s Legal Trouble in Indianapolis?
Stephen A. Smith has weighed in on the growing controversy surrounding former NFL quarterback and Fox Sports analyst Sanchez, who now faces a felony battery charge after a violent altercation in Indianapolis.
The 38-year-old ex–New York Jets quarterback was hospitalized Saturday morning with stab wounds to the right side of his chest following an incident involving a 69-year-old man.
In a conversation with Ryan Smith, Stephen A. addressed the case and the serious shift in the charges filed against Sanchez.
“Mark Sanchez is seen on tape, on footage, staggering and stumbling around with stab wounds to the right side of his chest,” Stephen said. “So for him to all of a sudden have misdemeanor charges upgraded to a felony, it must be, I mean, they must have staggering evidence against him to make that kind of assertion, even though he’s hospitalized with stab wounds, they still saying, ‘we’re charging you with the felonies and we’re not charging the other guy with anything.”
After being arrested at the hospital, Sanchez was initially charged with three misdemeanors: battery with injury, unlawful entry of a motor vehicle, and public intoxication. Within 48 hours, those charges were escalated.
Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears confirmed Monday that a Level 5 felony charge of battery involving serious bodily injury had been added.
“With that additional information, we have added more serious charges against Mr. Sanchez,” Mears said.
According to an affidavit obtained by USA TODAY Sports, Sanchez allegedly threw a 69-year-old man into a wall and then onto the ground during the altercation. The older man reportedly told police he acted in self-defense, claiming he feared for his life before using a knife. If convicted, Sanchez faces between one and six years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
The former quarterback had been in Indianapolis to serve as a commentator for the Colts-Raiders game that Sunday. After the incident, Brady Quinn filled in for him on the broadcast.
Sanchez, who was drafted by the New York Jets in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft out of USC, played in the league from 2009 to 2018 with five teams. Following his playing career, he transitioned into broadcasting, joining ESPN before moving to Fox Sports.
As the legal proceedings continue, questions remain about the circumstances that led to the altercation and the “staggering evidence” that prompted prosecutors to escalate the charges.
