In a world where the Kansas City Chiefs are surprisingly 0-2, Stephen A. Smith has a solution, and he’s not afraid to say it. No matter the off-field drama or what it might take, he believes there’s one move that can fix their problems: bringing back wide receiver Tyreek Hill from the Miami Dolphins.
Despite the Dolphins insisting they won’t trade him, Smith thinks head coach Andy Reid might just make them an offer they can’t refuse.
Why Is Stephen A. Smith Urging the Kansas City Chiefs to Reunite With Tyreek Hill?
Patrick Mahomes is currently dealing with injuries to several key wide receivers. While the Chiefs have lost to quality opponents, this is the first three-game losing streak of Mahomes’ career, dating back to last season. The team finds itself in a unique situation where its aging tight end, Travis Kelce, remains one of the best performers on the field. With no one else stepping up, Smith has no choice but to bring up the Dolphins’ star receiver.
“Tyreek Hill has obviously had some issues, we don’t need to get into all that. But if you’re the Kansas City Chiefs, do you get him?” Smith asks. “You’ve got people that will sit up there and say because of those off-field issues, don’t bring him. I say bring him.”
At 31 years old, the Chiefs wouldn’t expect Hill to perform at the same level he did in 2018. However, even in the 2023 season, Hill saw career highs in receptions (119) and receiving yards (1,799). Kansas City would not ask him to replicate those numbers, though the West Alabama graduate seems to still have plenty left in the tank.
Meanwhile, the situation in Miami adds another layer to the speculation. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has had a dreadful start to the 2025 season, and his reported off-field issues with Hill certainly don’t help team chemistry. The two still managed to put up a fight against the Buffalo Bills, but the loss dropped the Dolphins to 0-3. That’s a position the Chiefs could find themselves in after Sunday Night Football.
So far this season, Hill has 15 receptions for 198 yards and a touchdown. Despite having one fewer receiving touchdown than running back De’Von Achane and wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, Hill is tied for first in targets and leads the team in receiving yards and yards per reception.
Moving forward, Smith is one of many insiders and analysts who believe Hill could be the spark the Chiefs desperately need. While Miami is publicly refusing to move on from their star player, some think a trade could improve morale by removing the tension from their locker room. For now, neither team can answer any of these questions until a move is made, and it’s one the Dolphins are clearly in no rush to make.
