‘These Are So Gross’ – NFL Fans Brutally Roast Steelers’ 1933 Throwback Uniforms for 2025 Season

Fans took to social media to give their strong takes on the Pittsburgh Steelers' new throwback uniforms, inspired by the 1933 season.

The Pittsburgh Steelers unveiled their latest throwback uniforms on Monday, and the fan reaction wasn’t exactly what team executives hoped for. While the organization celebrated honoring their 1933 roots, social media told a different story about these gold and black throwbacks.

What Makes These Steelers Throwback Uniforms So Controversial?

Pittsburgh is one of the NFL’s most storied franchises, with uniforms that rank among the most respected in the game. However, the Steelers have never shied away from experimenting with alternate looks. Remember those polarizing Bumblebee uniforms from years past?

The newest throwback features a gold jersey with black stripes, white block letters outlined in black across the front, and a City of Pittsburgh crest positioned on the left shoulder. The back displays blocky, black numerals that match the retro aesthetic. Completing the look are beige pants paired with a gold helmet featuring a gray facemask and black stripe.

This uniform design pays homage to what the team wore in 1933, marking the franchise’s inaugural season. Despite the historical significance, many fans weren’t impressed with this nod to the team’s rich history.

The criticism came swift and blunt across social media platforms. “These are so gross,” someone said.

“Not gonna lie, they’re kind of bad lol,” another commented.

“Need to retire these,” someone else quipped.

Some fans found specific elements to appreciate while criticizing others. “The helmets are fire everything else makes me want to puke,” a user chimed in.

“Pittsburgh really got the worst throwbacks in the league to bring back,” someone added.

When Will the Steelers Debut These Throwback Uniforms?

Team president Art Rooney II expressed enthusiasm about the uniform reveal, emphasizing the connection to both franchise history and the city itself. “We’re excited to unveil our new throwback uniforms which not only pay tribute to the origins of the Steelers franchise but also to the deep connection we have to our hometown of Pittsburgh,” Rooney said in a team statement.

“It’s especially fitting that we’ll debut these uniforms on Sunday night, October 26 when we play the Green Bay Packers – another franchise in the league with a long and rich history.”

That October matchup carries additional storylines beyond the uniform debut. The game will mark Aaron Rodgers’ first appearance against his longtime former team, adding another layer of intrigue to the primetime contest.

Meanwhile, Rodgers wasn’t Pittsburgh’s only major acquisition this offseason. The Steelers made significant moves to bolster their roster, acquiring DK Metcalf in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks and landing Jalen Ramsey through a swap with the Miami Dolphins. The Ramsey deal sent three-time Associated Press first-team All-Pro Minkah Fitzpatrick back to Miami, the team that originally drafted him.

With training camp beginning Wednesday, the Steelers will have plenty of storylines to monitor throughout the preseason. Fans will be watching closely come fall, whether to see how the team’s new additions perform or to get another opportunity to voice their opinions about these controversial throwback uniforms.
