Steelers Star Jalen Ramsey Gets Brutally Honest About His Role in Pittsburgh’s Defense

New Pittsburgh Steelers star Jalen Ramsey opens up on his role in the defense, giving insight into his mindset as training camp gets underway.

The Pittsburgh Steelers made a surprising move this offseason by trading star safety Minkah Fitzpatrick to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for veteran cornerback Jalen Ramsey.

While Ramsey has long been considered one of the NFL’s top corners, the deal left a noticeable hole at safety for Pittsburgh. Rumors have since circulated that Ramsey might switch positions to help fill the gap. With training camp now underway, Ramsey recently shared his thoughts on the potential position change.

How Does Jalen Ramsey Feel About a Potential Position Change with the Pittsburgh Steelers?

Ramsey has been terrific throughout his nine-year NFL career. The superstar cornerback began his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars and earned first-team NFL All-Pro honors in just his second season.

In 2019,the Jaguars traded him to the Los Angeles Rams, where he played for four seasons and earned two more first-team All-Pro selections.

He was then traded to the Miami Dolphins ahead of the 2023-2024 season. While his overall athleticism has declined somewhat, Ramsey has remained productive, recording five interceptions over the last two seasons.

The Dolphins traded Ramsey to the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason. While Pittsburgh could use his talent at cornerback, Ramsey might also play safety, especially since the team traded Fitzpatrick, a three-time All-Pro, to acquire him.

At Steelers training camp, Ramsey was asked if he would be open to changing positions. He made it clear he’s willing to play wherever needed, but also stressed that since he’s already being paid like a top player, he expects to make a meaningful impact on the field.

“I just want to play football. I don’t care where I’m at, corner, safety, slot,” Ramsey said. “But at the same time, I don’t think I’m getting paid what I’m getting paid to not affect the game and be in certain spots.”

Ramsey is on a four-year, $84.7 million contract and clearly believes he should be playing where he can make the biggest impact. Based on his comments, it’s safe to say he still prefers to play cornerback.

The Steelers are thin at both cornerback and safety, so having a veteran like Ramsey could strengthen either position group. No matter where Pittsburgh decides to use him, they will need Ramsey to make a significant impact in their secondary.
