For days, Steelers fans waited to hear what Mike Tomlin had to say about one of the most headline-grabbing moves of the offseason. The team dealt George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys, and until Saturday, their longtime head coach hadn’t said a word.
That silence finally broke during Pittsburgh’s rookie minicamp, but as expected, Tomlin kept things brief.
Tomlin Breaks Silence on Pickens Landing in Dallas
There’s no denying Dallas went bold with this move. By adding Pickens, they gave CeeDee Lamb a running mate and created one of the league’s more dangerous wide receiver tandems; on paper, at least. But while excitement buzzes in Dallas, Pittsburgh’s side of the story is a bit more complicated.
When Tomlin spoke to reporters this weekend, he didn’t offer much in the way of detail. Instead, he backed up general manager Omar Khan’s earlier comments and made it clear his focus was already on the new class of rookies.
“I’m not going to add any color to it other than what Omar told you guys yesterday. We thought it was best and timely for all parties involved,” Tomlin said, per The Athletic. “Really, I’m just focused on the opportunity that is this weekend for the rookies.”
The trade, according to Khan, came together relatively quickly. While there had been light interest during the NFL Draft, nothing serious emerged until the Cowboys reached out in the days that followed. From there, discussions ramped up internally and with Pickens’ agent, Dave Mulugheta, someone Khan noted he had a solid relationship with.
“We discussed where things have been with George, where they are, and where things could go,” Khan explained. “And this trade made sense for everyone.”
A Talented but Tumultuous Tenure
Pickens brought a lot to the table in Pittsburgh. Despite instability at the quarterback position, he managed 59 catches for 900 yards and three scores in 2024 alone. Overall, his three-year run with the team produced 2,841 receiving yards and a dozen touchdowns across 48 games.
Still, things weren’t always smooth.
Tomlin publicly called out Pickens last year following a scuffle against the Browns, emphasizing the need for maturity. That moment reflected what some have described as a rocky relationship between coach and player; a dynamic that might have played a role in the team’s decision to move on.
Pickens, now a Cowboy, is doing his part to leave that chapter behind. While speaking to Dallas reporters, he made it clear that he’s done looking in the rearview mirror. His focus, he said, is strictly on the road ahead.
If he delivers on the potential he flashed in Pittsburgh and avoids the kind of drama that’s dogged him in the past, the Cowboys could end up looking like geniuses. But if the same issues resurface, Pittsburgh’s decision might end up aging pretty well.
