After months of tense negotiations and uncertainty, T.J. Watt’s future in Pittsburgh is finally secure. The superstar pass rusher and the Steelers ended their lengthy contract standoff Thursday with a groundbreaking deal that makes him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history. Following an offseason that brought Aaron Rodgers to the Steel City, this extension completes Pittsburgh’s most significant roster moves of 2025.
What Makes T.J. Watt’s Extension Historic for the Steelers and the NFL?
Watt has anchored Pittsburgh’s defense since entering the NFL as the 30th overall pick in the 2017 draft. The 2021 Defensive Player of the Year was entering the final year of his four-year, $112 million contract extension and wanted a new deal that reflected the current market.
The standoff between player and team created tension throughout the offseason. At times, it appeared the two sides might part ways. However, that scenario became a distant memory Thursday when they reached an agreement.
Pittsburgh’s defense has consistently ranked among the league’s best units, and Watt serves as its cornerstone. His 108.0 sacks over the past eight seasons lead the entire NFL during that span.
The Steelers showed exactly how much they value their star pass rusher by signing him to a three-year, $123 million contract extension that includes $108 million in guarantees. Tom Pelissero of NFL Network announced the deal, posting:
“The #Steelers and star DE T.J. Watt agreed to terms on a contract extension, per sources. Watt’s extension is expected to exceed $40 million a year, making him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history.”

Pelissero followed that announcement by noting that the deal will keep Watt in Pittsburgh for the next four seasons:
“It’s a three-year, $123 million extension that locks up T.J. Watt through 2028. As expected, he’s staying in Pittsburgh.”

Why Has Watt Been So Dominant Throughout His Career?
The numbers tell the story of Watt’s dominance since joining the league. Over his eight-year career, he has established himself among the elite defenders in football.
His statistics reflect consistent excellence: 462 total tackles, 331 solo tackles, 126 tackles for loss, 108.0 sacks, 225 quarterback hits, seven interceptions, 33 forced fumbles, 12 fumble recoveries, 49 passes defended and one defensive touchdown. He has led the league in sacks three times. In addition to being named 2021 Defensive Player of the Year, he has been named an All-Pro six times while earning seven Pro Bowl nods.
Pelissero added that Watt appears satisfied with the resolution:
“After an offseason of drama, T.J. Watt seems pleased with the outcome.”
The Steelers faithful certainly feel the same way that Watt presumably does, as the best player on their roster will remain in Pittsburgh through 2028.
