The Pittsburgh Steelers have been trying to find a franchise quarterback since Ben Roethlisberger retired after the 2021 season. This year, the team took Ohio State’s Will Howard in the sixth round of the NFL Draft. Roethlisberger recently shared his thoughts on the move.

Ben Roethlisberger Doesn’t Think Will Howard Is Going To Start Week 1
On his “Footbahlin’” podcast, Roethlisberger said he doesn’t expect Howard to start the season under center, even though the Steelers only have Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson on the roster.
“I don’t think Will’s going to be a Day 1 guy unless he just comes in and surprises everybody.”
That said, the two-time Super Bowl champ still believes Howard has upside. He even referenced Tom Brady as proof that late-round quarterbacks can succeed.
“There have been some pretty good ones that have come in late rounds. Tom Brady is one that I can think of. And no, I’m not trying to say Will Howard’s Tom Brady, but I like this pick. I like what he’s going to bring. I can’t wait to go see him in person. I’d love to get him on this show.”
Roethlisberger also gave Howard some advice:
“My advice to him would be to get here as soon as you can. Start being like, prepare like you’re going to be the guy without trying to step on the other quarterbacks’ toes.”
Pittsburgh Steelers Still Waiting on Aaron Rodgers Despite Drafting Howard
Even after selecting Howard at pick No. 185—the ninth quarterback taken in the draft—the Steelers still appear to be waiting on free agent and four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers visited the team’s facility on March 21 but left without signing.
Pittsburgh has been searching for a long-term QB since Roethlisberger retired. The team took Pitt’s Kenny Pickett in the first round that year but moved on after two underwhelming seasons. Now, Pickett will hope to win the Cleveland Browns’ starting quarterback job.
Last year, the Steelers rolled with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. Both quarterbacks have since signed with other teams, leaving the depth chart wide open once again, leaving Howard and Mason Rudolph to compete with each other.
