Steelers Analyst Floats Wild Trade Proposal for T.J. Watt in Exchange for Explosive 12-TD WR Amid Contract Uncertainty

As T.J. Watt’s contract stalemate with the Steelers continues, one analyst suggests a shocking move that could shake up the NFL landscape.

T.J. Watt was supposed to be with the Pittsburgh Steelers for life. The franchise cornerstone, the defensive identity, the guy who made opposing quarterbacks lose sleep. But contract talks have hit a wall, and what seemed like a sure thing has become the kind of standoff that could reshape both teams’ futures. With Aaron Rodgers’ window closing fast, one analyst thinks the Steelers might need to make the hardest decision in franchise history.

Could the Steelers Trade T.J. Watt for Lions’ Jameson Williams?

The Steelers’ offseason moves clearly show the team is in win-now mode. They believe the window opened by Aaron Rodgers in 2025 is the best shot they’ve had since Ben Roethlisberger’s retirement. That plan became even more evident with the acquisition of Jalen Ramsey via trade.

However, no one expected that this same offseason would see the relationship between the franchise and Watt begin to unravel. Watt has been Pittsburgh’s most important player in recent years and has established himself as one of the top five defenders in the NFL. He is now seeking to be paid accordingly in a new deal.

The problem is that Watt’s asking price may be higher than Pittsburgh’s willingness to pay. Myles Garrett broke the $40 million per year barrier this offseason, inflating the edge rusher market and making an agreement more difficult. With negotiations stalled, Andrew Fillipponi proposed a bold move for Pittsburgh.

If the Steelers were to acquire Williams, his game-breaking speed and proven production would instantly elevate their passing attack, giving Pittsburgh another receiver to build around for years.

What Would Williams Bring to Pittsburgh’s Offense?

Jameson Williams had his breakout season in 2024, surpassing 1,000 receiving yards and scoring eight scrimmage touchdowns. His explosiveness helped power one of the most creative offenses in the NFL under quarterback Jared Goff and offensive coordinator Ben Johnson in Detroit.

Williams would join DK Metcalf, who also arrived this offseason. Their different play styles would complement each other perfectly. Offensively, the Steelers would gain a significant boost, especially for Rodgers, who needs more help beyond Metcalf.

Meanwhile, the Lions would get a massive defensive upgrade. Pairing Watt with Aidan Hutchinson could create the best edge rusher duo in the NFL. Head coach Dan Campbell would have another elite defender to work with, helping maintain the defensive standard after losing his defensive coordinator this offseason.

Detroit’s Super Bowl chances would improve with Watt, but it would be a risky move for Pittsburgh. Watt has been selected for the Pro Bowl every year except his rookie season and has been named first-team All-Pro four times over the past six years, making second-team in 2024.

Pittsburgh’s defensive identity runs through Watt. With the season approaching, moving on from him after the draft would be nearly impossible to recover from fully. The franchise would be all-in on the Rodgers-led offense in his final NFL year, and the pressure in 2025 would be even greater than it already is.
