Sports Doctor Weighs In On Chiefs Star Rashee Rice’s Recovery From Torn LCL and Whether He’ll Be Ready For Week 1

The Kansas City Chiefs were not able to become the first team to win three consecutive Super Bowls and one reason was the loss of wide receiver Rashee Rice early in the season. He would accidentally collide with quarterback Patrick Mahomes in Week 4 while chasing a fumble and suffer a catastrophic knee injury.

While it took a while to officially diagnose the injury and eventually set up surgery, Rice would suffer an injury to his lateral collateral ligament (LCL) and miss the remainder of the 2024 season as the Chiefs struggled to find a top receiving target throughout the season.

Sports Doctor Gives Potential Update on Rashee Rice

Rice finished the 2024 season with 24 receptions on 29 targets for 288 yards (12.0 yards per catch) with a pair of touchdowns. It will be interesting to see if he will be able to be back on the field for Week 1 of the 2025 season, as the Chiefs need him to open up the passing game even more.

The injury to Rice was devastating to Kansas City as they lost arguably their best wide receiver early in the season. Despite being able to continue to win games, there was a sense of the passing game not being as threatening with him off the field.

On his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Jeff Mueller, PT DPT, posted his thoughts about a recent video of the wide receiver running a cone drill and evaluated how it appears Rice is on track to play in Week 1, or even if the game was today.

It is important to clarify that Dr. Mueller has not seen anything outside of social media videos of Rice’s update, to our knowledge. LCL injuries are often less of a timetable to return than an ACL injury is, but if his prognostication is correct, then the Chiefs would be thrilled.

Rice was interviewed by Muscle & Fitness ahead of the Super Bowl and explained how at the time, he was back to training and getting ready for Week 1 of the 2025 season.

“The knee is doing great. I’ve focused on mobility and balancing, incorporating kettlebells and lighter weights for squats. I didn’t even realize that I was enhancing my range of motion.”

He is on his way to being a star wide receiver in the NFL and if he is able to return to form. If Rice can look like how he did to begin last season, Kansas City would be in an excellent spot to make it back to the Super Bowl once again.
