Ex-Mexico International Issues Warning to Inter Miami Target on Moving to MLS to Play With Lionel Messi

An Inter Miami target was told to snub a move to the Lionel Messi-led side this month, just hours after the club submitted a bid to sign him.

Inter Miami is on a roll this month and moving aggressively in the market. The club wants to bolster the squad as much as possible, as co-owner Jorge Mas has set the goal of winning the CONCACAF Champions League this season.

Inter Miami Target Told Not To Join MLS Side

Inter Miami’s key target right now is German Berterame, who is open to leaving Monterrey to join the MLS side this month. The Mexican striker is the subject of a bid, a deal Mas has already confirmed in a recent media interaction.

The forward was in fine form last season in Liga MX, and Inter Miami sees him as the ideal long-term replacement for Suarez, who appeared to be running on fumes in 2025. The Eastern Conference side is confident of luring the 27-year-old, but former Mexico star Paul Aguilar has advised him against the move.

He said on Fox Sports’ “La Ultima Palabra” that the forward would be making a mistake by joining the MLS side, as he should remain with Monterrey and prepare for the FIFA World Cup this summer. He believes Berterame could receive a better offer after impressing at the national team’s summer tournament.

Berterame, who played for Argentina’s U17 team before switching allegiance to Mexico, has also been told that while MLS has improved, it is still not on the same level as Liga MX. Aguilar said:

“If I had to decide that, I would stay with Rayados (Monterrey), and after the World Cup, I would go to another team. For me, going to MLS is a step back, even though it is a league that has improved. I would stay with Rayados.”

Inter Miami has submitted a $15 million offer for the striker and is hopeful of sealing the deal this month.

The Herons have replaced Jordi Alba with Sergio Reguilón, while Rodrigo De Paul has joined permanently from Atletico Madrid, and Luis Suarez has extended his stay by another season.

They have also managed to lure Facundo Mura and Dayne St. Clair on free transfers, while David Ayala was acquired from the Portland Timbers for $2 million. Micael, who has MLS experience, has also been signed on a season-long loan from Brazilian side Palmeiras.

The MLS Cup champions are not done yet and have also been linked with Giovani Lo Celso, while Tadeo Allende is set to rejoin after an impressive 2025 season on loan from Celta Vigo.
