Argentina and Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi cemented himself as one of the best players of all time during his spell at Barcelona. However, he was forced to depart the Catalans as a free agent in 2021 owing to his former club’s financial difficulties.
Now, a Blaugrana presidential candidate has hinted that the attacker could return to the club.
Lionel Messi Homecoming Promises Made by Barcelona Executive
During a recent media appearance, Victor Font claimed he can bring the Argentine back to the La Liga champions for a final farewell befitting his legendary status.
“The undeniable reality is that the reconciliation with Messi will never happen with (current president Joan) Laporta. If we win the elections, Messi’s last dance is possible. He is a role model not only as a footballer but also as a person. He reflects what we Barça fans are like. A hard-working, committed, and honest leader who loves Barça,” Font remarked.
Slamming Joan Laporta’s presidential reign, Font continued, “We mustn’t forget that Messi has been deceived twice: in 2021, when he arrived in Barcelona to renew his contract, and in 2023, when he wanted to return to the club of his life with Xavi Hernandez. After raising his hopes, the board once again closed the door on him.”
Font, who is up against Laporta, Marc Cira, Xavier Vilajoana, and Joan Camprubi Montal in the presidential race, said Messi should be allowed to say his goodbyes on the pitch.
“He cannot end his time with Barça with a farewell in a closed room… it’s unthinkable. He must retire on the pitch. Obviously, how he does it depends on his wishes and his situation at the end of 2026. What we do want to say is that the only way he can say goodbye in the way he deserves, in his kit and on the pitch, is if Laporta is no longer in power after March 16,” Font, who previously lost the Blaugrana’s presidential race in 2021, concluded.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner helped the Catalan team lift 34 trophies before moving to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in 2021. He bagged 672 goals, more than any player in the club’s history, and provided 303 assists in 778 total games for the Spanish side.
Messi, who has reportedly been told he could be named Barcelona’s Honorary President, is currently focused on the start of the new Major League Soccer (MLS) season. He is set to be in action in Inter Miami’s opening match against Los Angeles FC this Saturday.
