FC Augsburg teenager Noahkai Banks has popped up as one of the best American defensive talents over the past year or so. However, the center-back is still unsure about representing the United States men’s national team (USMNT) in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
USMNT Could Lose Top Defensive Talent to Germany
Earlier this Friday, Feb. 27, Banks produced an eye-catching display as a part of Augsburg’s three-man defense in a 2-0 win over FC Köln. He completed 28 of his 34 passes, registered an assist, won two of his two aerial duels, and made five clearances during the clash.
After the end of the encounter, the USMNT Under-20 international was asked to provide his thoughts on Augsburg star Keven Schlotterbeck lauding him in a post-match interaction. He replied, “Since Schlotti can be very critical, it’s great when he praises you.”

The teenage defender also credited former Augsburg boss Sandro Wagner and current boss Manuel Baum for his continuous rise to maturity in the ongoing 2025-26 campaign.
“For me, Sandro was a brutally good coach, especially for me and Mert (Kömür). He helped us young players incredibly… he helped the team incredibly. There was no one on the team who didn’t like him. He laid the foundation for all of us. (Baum’s philosophy) also work and motivate us,” Banks responded when queried about his recent development.
Banks, who was born to an American father and German mother in December 2006, stated he is undecided about earning his first USMNT cap, with his eyes on Germany as well.
“I have a bit of contact with both national teams and am currently deciding. I don’t want to base my decision on the FIFA World Cup. I’m 19 years old and I don’t want to make a hasty decision,” the former TSV Dietmannsried and Augsburg youth player commented.
“I feel drawn to both nations. I grew up with my stepdad in Germany, but my real dad lives in America. I’m torn. I have to decide with my family what the best decision is,” he added.

So far this campaign, the American defender has started 18 of his 20 total appearances for Augsburg after making his senior debut in January 2025. He has found the back of the net once and provided one assist for his side this term, keeping five clean sheets.
Banks, who has played in 28 total outings for Augsburg, could be handed a second USMNT call-up next month. With head coach Mauricio Pochettino preferring a 3-4-2-1 formation, he could be picked in the upcoming friendlies due to his tactical familiarity.
