Germany legend Thomas Müller has issued a stern warning to Argentina great Lionel Messi ahead of the Major League Soccer (MLS) Cup final between Vancouver Whitecaps and Inter Miami.
Since arriving on a free transfer after departing his boyhood club Bayern Munich, Müller has proved to be a transformational signing for the Whitecaps. He helped his club finish second in the Western Conference table with 63 points before the start of the MLS Cup playoffs.
Apart from introducing his winning mentality and excellent leadership to his new team, the 2014 FIFA World Cup winner has also contributed in the form of goals and assists in 2025. The German has found the back of the net nine times and laid out four assists in 12 matches in all competitions for the Whitecaps.
Thomas Müller Prepared To Lock Horns With Lionel Messi
With the MLS Cup final set to take place this Saturday, Dec. 6, in Florida, Thomas Müller has shared his honest thoughts on the prospect of facing Lionel Messi in the near future. He lauded the Inter Miami captain before asserting that he will try his best to slow the Argentine down during a recent interview.
“To be honest, Messi is the best player we have in this game, but I’ll hunt you down again,” the Bayern Munich academy graduate said (via MARCA).
Müller, 36, has relished a long-standing on-field rivalry with Messi, having met one another 11 times for club and country at the senior level. While the Whitecaps veteran has been on the winning team eight times, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has tasted success only thrice (via The Guardian).

What Did Müller Say About Messi Last Week?
After the Vancouver Whitecaps’ 3-1 Western Conference final victory against San Diego FC last Saturday, Thomas Müller noted that Inter Miami is more reliant on Lionel Messi than the Canadian champions are on him.
“It’s not about Messi against Thomas Müller, it’s Miami against the Whitecaps. Maybe they rely a little bit more on him than we do on me, because we are such a good group, you know what I mean?” the 13-time Bundesliga champion said (via MLS).
Müller also emphasized the significance of having superstars participate in the MLS Cup final.
“The nice thing about it is not only playing against the greatest player who played our game and is still playing our game, but it’s more that when you have a pairing like this, more people are watching. If more people are watching, the value also for you as a player, as an individual, also for your team, and also for your franchise, is way bigger,” the German said.
