Inter Miami, captained by Argentina great Lionel Messi, has been quite active in the winter transfer window, having signed eight new players. However, they have revealed that one of their January signings is set to be out of action with an injury.
But who is the new Herons’ permanent signing already set for a period on the sidelines?
Lionel Messi’s New Inter Miami Teammate Suffers Knee Injury
On Wednesday, Jan. 28, Inter Miami announced that Sergio Reguilón has sustained a Grade 2 sprain in his right knee following medical assessments. Their new left-back picked up the injury during a 3-0 pre-season friendly loss to Alianza Lima on Saturday, Jan. 24.
Reguilón’s injury is believed not to require surgery, and his recovery will be monitored on a week-by-week basis. The Spaniard could be out for between two and six weeks, meaning he could miss the Herons’ 2026 Major League Soccer (MLS) opener on Feb. 21.
The Real Madrid academy graduate, who joined Inter Miami on a Bosman move earlier this month, suffered his injury in the opening 15 minutes against Alianza Lima. He was replaced by new winter signing Facundo Mura in the match against the Peruvian outfit.
Reguilón, who has been signed as now-retired Jordi Alba’s replacement, endured a difficult 2024-25 season. He featured in only six matches in all competitions for Tottenham Hotspur, picking up two yellow cards in 316 minutes of action in the process.
Inter Miami, on the other hand, will next face Colombian team Atletico Nacional in Medellin this Saturday, Jan. 31. They will lock horns with Ecuadorian club Barcelona de Guayaquil in Guayaquil on Feb. 7 for their final preseason friendly encounter in 2026.

Meanwhile, Monterrey striker Germán Berterame has opened up on his links to Inter Miami, who are reportedly closing in on a $15 million deal for the star in recent times.
“I’m doing well. Right now, I am very focused on the national team. I just arrived today. So now, it’s time to enjoy my family and we’ll analyse it this week. Like I said, I’ve just arrived and I’ll look at it during the week. It’s a dream for me and everyone who gets called up to the national team. We have to stay focused on that,” Berterame told Claro Sports.
Berterame, 27, could emerge as a starter over Luis Suarez for the Messi-led side should he complete a permanent transfer in the near future. He has scored 68 goals and recorded 15 assists in 153 appearances across all competitions for Monterrey so far.
