Saudi Pro League Respond to Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr Boycott With Strong Message

Cristiano Ronaldo is set to miss his second straight Al-Nassr match this week in protest against a lack of funding for his club.

Al-Nassr forward Cristiano Ronaldo is currently on strike, reportedly unhappy with his club’s below-par transfer activity. He has even reportedly warned his club’s owners, the Public Investment Fund (PIF) of Saudi Arabia, that he is ready to leave Al-Nassr.

Now, the Saudi Pro League has reacted to the veteran’s decision to boycott club games.

Saudi Pro League Addresses Cristiano Ronaldo’s Strike

After Ronaldo missed Al-Nassr’s recent 1-0 victory over Al-Riyadh due to frustration over Karim Benzema joining Al-Hilal, a senior Saudi Pro League spokesperson has spoken out on the issue. He asserted every Saudi Arabian outfit operates as an independent entity and no individual player has the authority to dictate the workings of other clubs.

Earlier on Thursday, Feb. 5, the Saudi Pro League spokesperson told talkSPORT, “The Saudi Pro League is structured around a simple principle: every club operates independently under the same rules. Clubs have their own boards, their own executives and their own football leadership. Decisions on recruitment, spending and strategy sit with those clubs, within a financial framework designed to ensure sustainability and competitive balance. That framework applies equally across the league.”

The senior league official also hinted that Ronaldo’s recent actions are unwelcoming, as no one in the Saudi Pro League has the power to influence other clubs’ businesses.

“Cristiano has been fully engaged with Al-Nassr since his arrival and has played an important role in the club’s growth and ambition. Like any elite competitor, he wants to win. But no individual, however significant, determines decisions beyond their own club. Recent transfer activity demonstrates that independence clearly. One club strengthened in a particular way. Another chose a different approach. Those were club decisions, taken within approved financial parameters.”

In the winter transfer window, Al-Nassr signed just two players: Abdullah Al-Hamdan from Al-Hilal and Haydeer Abdulkareem from Iraqi side Al-Zawraa.

On the other hand, Saudi Pro League leaders Al-Hilal relished a busy winter window, having signed Benzema from Al-Ittihad and Pablo Mari from Fiorentina. They also roped in Saimon Bouabre from NEOM SC, Kader Meite from Stade Rennais, and three other stars.

With Ronaldo set to miss Al-Nassr’s next contest against Al-Ittihad this Friday, Feb. 6, talks are reportedly set to take place between the attacker and senior PIF and Saudi Pro League officials. He currently has a contract until June 2027 at Al-Nassr.
