Wrexham is still battling for a place in the Premier League promotion playoffs and is on the cusp of creating history by earning a fourth promotion in a row. The club is just 15 matches away from earning its place, but has now suffered a double injury blow.
Wrexham Loses the Match and Two Key Players
Wrexham faced Millwall in matchweek 31 of the EFL Championship this weekend, and it was a six-pointer as the two sides were battling for a place in the playoffs. The Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney-owned side was at home and thus had the upper hand, but it lasted only until the second-half kickoff.
After a goalless first half, an own goal from Max Cleworth gave the away side the lead just before the hour mark. The goal came just minutes after Liberato Cacace was forced off due to injury.
The injury was the second of the game for Wrexham, as Matty James was substituted in the first half. Phil Parkinson still went all out for the win, with his side attacking at every opportunity.
They were chasing the game but ended up conceding again, as Josh Coburn sealed the win five minutes from time. The loss saw Preston North End pull level on points after defeating relegation-threatened Portsmouth.

Parkinson spoke to the media after the loss, admitting the performance was bad, but the injury news was worse. He is unsure how long the two players will be out and said (per GOAL):
“It is a disappointing day for us. We controlled long periods, but we did not make the right decisions in the final third, and at this level, you get punished for one mistake. Losing two players like that changes the gam,e and it changes the next few weeks as well.”
“We will assess them properly, but clearly, it is not ideal when we are heading into a really important part of the season. We have worked hard to put ourselves in contention, and we are still in the fight. The message to the players is simple: stay calm, recover properly, and be ready for the next challenge because the table can change very quickly.”
Wrexham does not have time to dwell on the loss, as the club needs to prepare for a big FA Cup game next week, when it hosts Ipswich Town.
