Ryan Reynolds’ Wrexham Dealt Blow As Rival EFL Championship Club Leapfrog Them in Race To Sign $6 Million Attacker

Wrexham's fourth straight promotion hopes are in danger following one club's advances to sign one of their top winter targets.

Wrexham, owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac, is aiming to achieve an exceptional fourth straight promotion this season. As a result, they are believed to be keen to bolster their squad in the second half of the ongoing 2025-26 campaign.

But one EFL Championship side is reportedly in pole position to sign a Wrexham target.

Wrexham Could Miss Out on South American Winger

According to talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook, Birmingham City have emerged as the front-runners to sign Brighton & Hove Albion outcast Jeremy Sarmiento permanently. They have yet to lodge a bid for the player and are likely to face competition from Wrexham soon.

Sarmiento, who is also a subject of interest from Middlesbrough this month, is currently on a season-long loan at Serie A team Cremonese. However, the Ecuadorian winger has made just seven overall appearances for the Italian outfit so far this campaign.

The former Benfica youth star is believed to be recalled by Brighton and put up for sale this transfer window. The 23-year-old, who is valued at $6 million by Transfermarkt, is expected to move to the EFL Championship due to his prior experience in the English second-tier.

In the 2023-24 season, Sarmiento played for West Bromwich Albion on loan prior to joining Ipswich Town on a temporary switch. After helping Ipswich gain promotion, he represented Burnley 35 times in the EFL Championship last term, guiding them to promotion as well.

So far, the Wrexham-linked winger has netted nine times in 75 EFL Championship games.

Wrexham Told To Sign FIFA World Cup Winner

During a recent interview with BoyleSports, former Spain midfielder Gaizka Mendieta urged Wrexham to sign Real Madrid legend Sergio Ramos on a Bosman move this January.

“Wrexham are a huge story. They have been followed in Spain… it’s a romantic story and a global phenomenon. Having a Spanish player there would be special, we see teams signing players from different countries like Japan and others to create a market there,” the former Valencia and Barcelona star said.

Mendieta continued, “I’m sure Wrexham have considered that… it would be fantastic to see a Spanish player there and why not Sergio Ramos? It’s been rumored that he wants to buy Sevilla, but he is a free agent and still wants to play so why not. It’s an option.”

Ramos, 39, was released by Mexican outfit Monterrey last month and is on the lookout for a new club now. He scored eight goals in 34 matches for the Liga MX club in 2025.
