Cristiano Ronaldo started his illustrious career as a wide midfielder before transforming into an inside forward. Now, he is considered one of the best strikers in the world. And, Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez is also of the same opinion about the veteran.
Portugal Boss Sheds Light on Cristiano Ronaldo’s Role
During a recent interview with ESPN, Martinez was asked to share his two cents on why the Al-Nassr superstar continues to feature for Portugal despite being 40 years of age.
“Cristiano Ronaldo manages to be at a level that makes him deserving to be called up. And, the national team is better when Cristiano is on the field. He is the most experienced player in world football. We need to utilise that. It can only be positive for a new player to be able to learn from the most experienced player there is,” the Spanish tactician said.
Martinez, who helped Belgium finish third at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, also stated Ronaldo still starts for Portugal due to his exceptional positioning inside the penalty box.
“Then, there’s the aspect of his movements inside the penalty area. He’s a very intelligent player. He creates spaces, breaks through the defensive line, and creates spaces for other players. And he’s a penalty area player,” the former Everton manager commented.
Martinez concluded, “That’s the aspect where we need to utilise Cristiano’s strengths. But, all aspects of him, his commitment, what it means to play for the national team… are very important. He’s the top scorer, he’s the best penalty area player we have in Portugal.”
In light of Martinez’s recent comments, the Al-Nassr striker is set to start in a number nine role for Portugal at the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. He is likely to be surrounded by the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Rafael Leao, and Joao Felix this summer.
