Real Madrid is always keen to add the best talent to its squad, and it ensures its scouts work year-round to identify players before other clubs. They have been tracking one prospect since the 2025 U20 World Cup and are now looking to sign a player from the EFL Championship.
Real Madrid Eyes Moroccan Cristiano Ronaldo
According to a report in Defensa Central, Watford winger Othmane Maamma is the latest player on the radar for Los Blancos. They see the winger as an ideal addition who fits perfectly into the club’s transfer policies.
The Spanish giants are keen on signing players before they burst onto the scene, and Maamma is one they are eager to secure, as they did with Vinicius Jr and Rodrygo. The winger was named the best player at the U20 World Cup last season, won the Golden Ball, and is steadily attracting interest.
Watford secured his signing from Montpellier last summer, and he has settled in well. Having played just 10 matches in the EFL Championship, the 20-year-old has already scored three goals and recorded one assist.
With the futures of Vinicius Jr. and Rodrygo in the balance, Maamma would be a perfect addition, as he can operate on both wings. The Spanish report suggested that Los Blancos could break their rule of not spending in the January window to beat off competition.
It added that Real Madrid could sign the winger and loan him back to Watford for the remainder of the season. The English side is reportedly open to selling the winger, who has been dubbed the Moroccan Cristiano Ronaldo, for just $17.5 million.
The Spanish side will need to act quickly, as Premier League clubs are also showing interest in the 20-year-old. Chelsea is known for signing young talents from around the world and has set their sights on the Watford star.
Jamie Gittens and Alejandro Garnacho have not managed to settle in quickly at the club, and the revolving door could see them leave just six months after joining if Maamma is signed.
Manchester United is also in the running and will be keen to act after missing out on Antoine Semenyo. The Watford star is cheaper than what the team was willing to pay for the AFC Bournemouth attacker, who is heading to Manchester City.
However, Real Madrid’s biggest competition could be Liverpool, as it eyes a long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah. The Reds are also seeking a left winger, and Maamma fits their needs both this season and in the future.
