Neymar Junior Hints at Retirement As He Fights for Place in Brazil’s 2026 FIFA World Cup Squad

Brazil's 2026 FIFA World Cup hopeful Neymar Junior has hinted he could retire following an injury-stricken 14-month spell.

Brazilian legend Neymar Junior is regarded as one of the best soccer stars of the modern era due to his unparalleled dribbling ability and brilliant goal-scoring prowess. However, the 34-year-old has struggled to stay fit due to a number of injuries over the last year or so.

Now, the ex-Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) star has dropped a retirement hint.

Neymar Opens Up on Future Ahead of 2026 FIFA World Cup

During a recent interview with Caze TV, Santos attacker Neymar admitted that he could opt to hang up his boots this year, with him aiming to play in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“I don’t know what the future holds for me. It’s possible in December I’ll want to retire. I’m living day by day. This year is crucial, not only for Santos, but also for the Brazilian national team and for me. I wanted to come back at 100% this campaign which is why I was rested for some matches,” the 2015 UEFA Champions League winner commented.

Neymar, who surpassed soccer great Pele to become Brazil’s all-time top goalscorer back in September 2023, also provided insight into his efforts to gain full match sharpness.

“I know a lot of people are saying all sorts of things, and do not understand the day-to-day reality, but I have to face it. Santos have put an excellent plan in place regarding this. Yes, of course, I wanted to come back to help my team, but in the end, I preferred to rest so I could come back at 100%, pain-free, fear-free, and in top form,” Neymar added.

Neymar, who left Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal to join Brazilian outfit Santos in January 2025, made his first appearance of 2026 past Sunday, Feb. 15. He came on as a substitute in his team’s 6-0 victory over Velo Clube-SP and registered an assist as well.

Reflecting on his return, the ex-PSG ace said, “I managed to come back well in the last game. I’m happy and relieved to be back a little stronger than before… I need to get back into my rhythm, but with perseverance, I’ll reach 100%. I’m taking it step by step now. I don’t know what the future holds… my instincts will decide. One day at a time.”

The five-time Ligue 1 and two-time La Liga winner has suffered multiple hamstring injuries since returning to his boyhood club last January. He also underwent surgery on a recurring knee issue last December and is hoping to shine before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Neymar’s last appearance for Brazil came in a 2-0 loss against Uruguay in October 2023.
