USMNT Boss Mauricio Pochettino Open to EFL Championship Move, Insider Claims

USMNT boss Mauricio Pochettino is open to taking charge of Tottenham Hotspur in the EFL Championship next season, says journalist Ben Jacobs.

United States men’s national team head coach Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly set to leave his current job following the World Cup this summer, at the end of his contract. A journalist has stated that the Ligue 1 title-winning boss could work for an EFL Championship side next term.

Mauricio Pochettino Could Return to Tottenham Even if Spurs Are Relegated

During a recent appearance on the YouTube channel “The United Stand,” transfer journalist Ben Jacobs asserted that the USMNT boss is likely to return to Tottenham Hotspur this summer. He also stated that Spurs’ potential relegation from the Premier League would not prove to be a hurdle for the former Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea manager.

“Mauricio Pochettino is perhaps more likely to go back to Tottenham. And you know what, that might even happen should Spurs go down to the Championship,” Jacobs said.

Jacobs hinted that the Argentine could be enticed by the prospect of being the manager to help Spurs gain promotion from the Championship in the upcoming 2026-27 campaign.

“It would be more about the finances and affording Pochettino, but I don’t think he would necessarily be put off going into the Championship with Tottenham, feeling like they would still be in a strong position to come back up,” the reputed insider concluded.

Tottenham, who won the UEFA Europa League trophy last season, are currently 16th in the 2025-26 Premier League table. They are on just 29 points from 28 league games, only one point ahead of 17th-placed Nottingham Forest and 18th-placed West Ham United.

With a tough fixture schedule ahead of them, the Spurs are in real danger of getting relegated. They also have to manage two UEFA Champions League round-of-16 clashes against La Liga side Atlético Madrid later this month, which could affect their players’ workloads.

Pochettino Confirms He Is Open to New Opportunities After World Cup

Pochettino has confirmed that he is open to new opportunities after helping the USMNT at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where his current team will compete in Group D.

“I’m always linked to clubs, to Tottenham, just like at one time I was linked to Espanyol, or to other clubs. But no, we are focused on the World Cup, on the United States. My contract runs until after the World Cup, so after that we’ll see what happens. Open to everything,” the former PSG defender said on “Radiogaceta de los Deportes” on RNE.

During his stay at Tottenham between 2014 and 2019, Pochettino helped Spurs finish as Premier League runners-up and Champions League runners-up once each.
