‘Depends on Us’ – Matheus Cunha Reveals Manchester United ‘Goal’ for the Season After Derby Win Over City

Manchester United star sets clear season target after stunning Manchester City in the Premier League at Old Trafford.

Manchester United has little left to play for this season after being knocked out of the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup in its opening matches of each competition. The club is well off the pace in the Premier League title race, meaning silverware is once again out of reach.

Manchester United’s Matheus Cunha Shares Season Goal After Derby Victory Against City

Manchester United sacked Ruben Amorim this month following his explosive comments about the club’s leadership, and interim manager Darren Fletcher failed to impress during his two games in charge. The Red Devils have since appointed Michael Carrick, and the Englishman has already energized the fan base ahead of the coming months.

United defeated Manchester City in the derby at Old Trafford last week, with Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu finding the net. The result was a shock, as the Cityzens entered the match on a 13-match unbeaten streak in all competitions, while the hosts were low on confidence and under new management.

Matheus Cunha, who provided the assist in the second half, spoke to Globoesporte after the match, admitting the team was fully aware of the quality of the opposition.

He said he was pleased the players rose to meet the supporters’ expectations and hoped the victory marked the beginning of a new era at the club. He said:

“We know the weight of the match and the quality of the opponent. It’s one of the toughest games in England. But when you go onto the pitch representing a club the size of Manchester United, you always have to give your best, especially on days like these.

“The demands are high and we have to live up to them. I’m happy to have helped with an assist, but even happier with the three points. May this be the beginning of a new cycle for our team.”

Cunha has now set his sights on qualifying for the UEFA Champions League next season after the club failed to secure European football this term, finishing 15th in the table last season. To achieve that goal, the Red Devils must finish in the top four this season. He said:

“Now we have until the end of the season playing only the league, and our goal is to return to the Champions League. It only depends on us, and we will give our best.”

Manchester United is just one point outside the top four, with Liverpool currently occupying the final Champions League spot with 36 points.
