Spain and Chelsea man Marc Cucurella was involved in an on-pitch brawl during a recent 3-2 league win over West Ham United. And, he has now credited one of his Blues teammates for preventing harm on him during the skirmish against the Hammers.
Marc Cucurella Jokes About Chelsea Teammate’s Help
Earlier on Jan. 31, Chelsea came back from two goals down to register a thrilling home win against West Ham. Cucurella, who came on as a second half substitute, restored parity with the Blues’ second goal in the 70th minute of the Premier League clash.
In the final minutes of the encounter, Cucurella tried to hound West Ham’s Adama Traore to prevent a corner against his side. However, he found himself thrown off the pitch by Traore, resulting in a mass brawl involving almost all outfield players.
During a recent interaction on 3Cat, the former Barcelona left-back jokingly suggested that Joao Pedro ‘saved’ his life by stepping in to defuse the heated situation. He asserted, “Joao saved my life, honestly. If I were Joao, I would have sprinted back like crazy.”
“It was towards the end of the game. I put my body in a bit, we scuffled, and at one point, I stood up and saw I was very close to (Traore). So I thought, ‘I’ll stick my head out a little and see if I can stir things up’, and then he grabbed me, pulled me down, and a real scuffle broke out,” the 2024 UEFA European Championship winner concluded.
Minutes later, Traore joined 3Cat’s show and cleared the air about last Saturday’s melee.
“He’s a really good guy. It was nothing personal and there will never be. It all stays on the pitch and it was just the heat of the moment. I really didn’t mean to do it… it wasn’t my intention. I just wanted to talk to the linesman,” the Spanish winger said.

While both Pedro and Traore received yellow cards for their involvement in the brawl, West Ham defender Jean-Clair Todibo was sent off for grabbing Pedro by the neck.
Meanwhile, Cucurella has continued to be Chelsea’s first-choice left-back under head coach Liam Rosenior. The 27-year-old has contributed one goal and two assists in 33 games in all competitions for the Stamford Bridge outfit in the ongoing 2025-26 season.
Ahead of their away league contest at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, Feb. 7, the Blues are in fifth place in the Premier League table. They are on 40 points from 24 outings, just one point behind fourth-placed Manchester United.
