Liverpool Weigh Buy-Back Move To Bring 23-Year-Old Defender Back to Anfield

Liverpool are weighing up a triggering Jarell Quansah's $92 million buy-back clause eight months after his Bayer Leverkusen move.

Liverpool have endured a sub-par campaign, failing to mount a Premier League title challenge after lifting their 20th top-flight title last term. They have shipped 37 goals from 28 league games this season, and are reportedly keen to sign an ex-Reds defender as a fix.

Liverpool Mulling Over Potential Re-Signing of Player

According to Sky Deutschland journalist Patrick Berger, Liverpool are considering re-signing Jarell Quansah from Bayer Leverkusen in the future. They could choose to trigger the star’s $92 million buy-back clause, inserted in the deal that saw him depart Arne Slot’s club. But, they have to arrive at a decision soon as the aforesaid clause will expire this May.

Quansah, 23, left the Anfield side in a transfer worth over $40 million to join Leverkusen in the summer of 2025. He has settled in well at the Bundesliga outfit this season, starting 28 of his 32 club appearances across all competitions and scoring four goals so far.

The Liverpool academy graduate has matured in the past eight months, developing his ball-playing ability as a right-sided center-back in a three-man defense. He has helped his team register 13 clean sheets, guiding them to the UEFA Champions League round of 16.

During his brief stay at the Reds’ senior team, Quansah won a Premier League title and one EFL Cup. He broke into the Merseyside club’s starting 11 in the 2023-24 campaign, starting 27 of his 33 overall appearances under legendary Reds manager Jürgen Klopp.

However, he dropped down in Liverpool’s pecking order under Slot last season. He made 25 appearances across competitions, starting just 13 of them and featuring in 1290 minutes of action. He was subsequently replaced by Italian ace Giovanni Leoni last August.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl has confirmed his club were keen to sign Jérémy Jacquet before the Reds finalized a $82 million deal for the defender.

“For example, Jérémy Jacquet would have been a great player for us. But when we see that he’s going to Liverpool at the age of 19 for a reported 70 million euros, we have to consider what’s best for Bayern. Our answer was to pursue Dayot (Upamecano’s) contract extension as he knows the club (and) is in his prime,” Eberl told Sport1 earlier this month.

Jacquet, who will join Slot’s side this summer after his winter deal, has started all 21 of his total appearances for Stade Rennais in the ongoing 2025-26 term. He is currently nursing a shoulder injury, which he picked up just days after choosing to join the Reds.
