Liverpool is set to be without Conor Bradley for the rest of the season, and now Jeremy Frimpong is also out for the foreseeable future. The Reds are now working on getting a replacement and have identified the ideal player.
Liverpool in Talks To Sign Sunderland Loanee
Arne Slot has been forced to use Dominik Szoboszlai as a right-back in several games this season, and the Hungarian has delivered as a make-shift full-back. The manager is keen to bring in a defender who can help fill the void and also operate as a center back when needed.
According to a report in The Athletic, the Anfield side is in talks over a loan move for Lutsharel Geertruida. The Dutchman is on a season-long loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig, and has made 17 appearances in the Premier League this season.
Fabrizio Romano was the first to report the news earlier today, posting on X (formerly Twitter) that the contract has taken place, as he is a defender who has worked with the manager at Feyenoord. The 25-year-old has played 127 matches under the Dutch manager at the Eredivisie side, scoring a stunning 16 goals and assisting nine times while playing as a right-back, center-back, and occasionally left-back.
Bradley injured his knee in the goalless draw to Arsenal in January and has been ruled out for the rest of the season. Frimpong picked up a hamstring injury in their UEFA Champions League game and is set to be sidelined for the next few weeks.
Slot confirmed last week that Liverpool needed to explore the market for a full-back, as he had no options on the right side. He admitted that nothing was guaranteed and said:
“I think you know the answer. The answer is if we think a player can help us and we think it is possible, we will do so. Those are conversations that do not take place in this room. I gave the answer I gave. If that means it’s likely or unlikely then okay. It could be a quiet day Monday. You want to play golf?”
Speaking to the media after the win over Newcastle United, Slot added that they are working on adding a player, and was adamant that no player would be leaving.
“I think we are trying to strengthen the squad and not trying to weaken it. But yeah, 48 hours to go. Let’s see where the window ends up.”
The Reds were also linked with Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries, but the Serie A side wanted Curtis Jones to move in the opposite direction. The Premier League side was unwilling to sanction the exit, and the move is now unlikely.
