Lionel Messi Jersey Outsells Cristiano Ronaldo’s in Chelsea Legend John Terry’s Auction

John Terry’s auction was an overwhelming success as Lionel Messi broke a record when his jersey sold for more than Cristiano Ronaldo’s iconic kit.

Chelsea legend John Terry sold more than 50 items from his personal collection last month. The Englishman had match-worn jerseys of several soccer legends up for auction, including those of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Auction Sees Lionel Messi Jersey Sell Above Cristiano Ronaldo’s

Terry consigned items to New Jersey-based auction house Goldin Auctions and made just under $700,000 in January. The Chelsea legend sold a few of his own jerseys, along with some of his teammates’ items, as well as trophy replicas and captain’s armbands. An undisclosed portion of the proceeds is set to go toward Terry’s foundation, which helps disadvantaged youths in the United Kingdom.

According to ESPN, the most sought-after items at the auction were jerseys worn by Messi, Ronaldo, and Arsenal legend Thierry Henry. Henry’s match-worn and signed Arsenal jersey from 2009 sold for $98,820.

Messi’s match-worn jersey from 2006, when Barcelona faced Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League group stage, was also up for auction. It sold for a stunning $183,000 — the biggest bid of the night, and now the fourth-most expensive soccer shirt ever.

Terry posted about the kit on Instagram and said: “This is a very special shirt, it is from the great and one and only Lionel Messi, when he played at Stamford Bridge. It’s the orange kit – that they didn’t wear too often – so again very special. But because I was a defender and he was an attacker we were very close to each other throughout the whole game. So when there was a minute or two minutes to go I would get a little bit closer to him just so I could so I could get his shirt after the game.”

Ronaldo’s kit that went up for auction dated back to his Manchester United days, when he faced Chelsea in 2008. The jersey sold for $115,900, though it came from a Premier League clash rather than the UEFA Champions League final. According to ESPN, it was a record price paid for a Ronaldo jersey.

In addition to those three, Terry also auctioned jerseys worn by Gianluigi Buffon, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Paolo Maldini, Gianfranco Zola, Samuel Eto’o, Leonardo Bonucci, Rio Ferdinand, Cesc Fabregas, Paulo Ferreira, Ashley Cole, Claude Makelele, and Marcel Desailly, according to the report.

Terry also sold his own captain’s armbands from England, Chelsea, and Aston Villa matches, along with shin guards and boots.
