Pundit Claims Lionel Messi Is ‘Already Like an Owner’ at Inter Miami As He Rates His Stint With MLS Club

A former Premier League defender has advised Lionel Messi to follow in the footsteps of Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham.

Lionel Messi has taken the Major League Soccer (MLS) by storm since joining Inter Miami in July 2023. And, former Arsenal and Manchester City man Bacary Sagna has stated that the Argentine has been acting as if he is the owner of the Herons of late.

Why Was Lionel Messi Told To Stay at Inter Miami After Retirement?

Over the last two-and-a-half years, Messi has helped Inter Miami establish themselves as a top MLS club. The 38-year-old has guided his side to an MLS Cup, an MLS Supporters’ Shield, and a Leagues Cup, winning the MLS Most Valuable Player award twice.

During a recent chat with GOAL, former France international Sagna lauded the attacker.

“He’s a phenomenon. He was born with talent, with the gifts. If you combine his game and passion and love… it makes things perfect. It also allows him to make the impact he is still having at his age. I think he is having an amazing time in Miami,” Sagna began.

The former right-back continued, “I think he is already like an owner of the club, his family is very present. It’s like being at home. He could play for a few more years.”

When asked if Messi should follow in the footsteps of Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham and move into club ownership after retiring, Sagna replied in a positive manner.

“I think he will stay in Miami. It suits him. There are a lot of Spanish speakers in Miami and his English is not great! It’s like being in a safe environment,” he responded.

Sagna concluded, “Being in the United States, business-wise, is perfect for him, because he is a brand. Building this brand after football is perfect for him and his kids. He seems to like playing for the club. He has David Beckham next to him. Now… he is playing and can’t get involved with the surroundings of the club, but is involved with his performances.”

The Barcelona great, who has a deal until December 2028 with his team, is currently involved in Inter Miami’s pre-season camp. He will next be in action for his side in a friendly against the Colombian team Atletico Nacional in Medellin this Saturday, Jan. 31.

Meanwhile, the Javier Mascherano-coached outfit has permanently signed eight new stars and loaned in one player so far this month. A few of the notable arrivals are Rodrigo De Paul, Sergio Reguilon, Tadeo Allende, Dayne St. Clair, and Facundo Mura.
