Kylian Mbappe Matches Cristiano Ronaldo UCL Feat After Scoring in Real Madrid Win

Kylian Mbappé has done it again, matching one of Cristiano Ronaldo’s records and with a chance to break it soon.

Cristiano Ronaldo is arguably the greatest goalscorer in soccer history. Kylian Mbappe has now matched another goalscoring record held by the Real Madrid legend after finding the back of the net this week.

Kylian Mbappe Matches Another Cristiano Ronaldo Record

Mbappe finished December 2025 by matching Ronaldo’s record for the most goals scored in a calendar year for Real Madrid. His tally of 59 goals equaled the Portuguese superstar’s mark, and he is now determined to break as many of his idol’s records as possible.

The Frenchman scored twice in a 6-1 win over his former side AS Monaco in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, Jan. 20, helping him match another record set by the former Manchester United star. The 27-year-old now has 11 goals in six Champions League matches this season, a feat previously achieved by Ronaldo during the 2015-16 campaign.

However, the European competition’s group-stage format has since evolved. When the Portuguese forward set the record, teams faced three opponents twice, playing a total of six matches to reach the knockout stage.

Under the current format, teams play eight different opponents, with the top eight qualifying directly for the Round of 16 and the next 16 teams competing in a playoff round for the remaining eight spots.

The change could benefit the France national team captain Mbappe, as he could break the record for most goals in the UEFA Champions League group stage if he scores against Benfica.

The former PSG star already appears focused on the next Ronaldo record following his strong start to the campaign. He is six goals shy of the Portuguese forward’s tally of 17, which remains the most goals scored in a single UEFA Champions League season.

Another Real Madrid star, Vinicius Junior, is also closing in on one of Ronaldo’s club records. The Brazilian winger has 28 assists in the UEFA Champions League, surpassing Karim Benzema’s total of 27.

The 25-year-old is now just three assists away from matching Ronaldo’s club record. He will have a chance to narrow the gap next week when Real Madrid faces former manager Jose Mourinho’s Benfica in the final match of the league phase.

Los Blancos are poised to qualify for the knockout stage, which would give the Brazilian at least two more matches to claim the record before the end of the season.
